State line Distillery
John Mleziva learned how to distill in Scotland and brought that knowledge back to Madison to open State Line in 2017. He uses local grains and botanicals to make spirits that range from a sagey American gin to a rum that draws from a 250-gallon dunder pit, State Line’s version of the Jamaican tradition. The distillery may have started with clear spirits, but on the way are brown liquors, like a Wisconsin single malt reminiscent of a Highland Scotch. The on-site cocktail lounge serves the spirits in drinks like the Existing Rendition, made with aquavit, acid-adjusted grapefruit and Milwaukee-made Bittercube Jamaican #2 Bitters.
