Geralds Bar

Geralds is a Eurocentric yet wholly Melburnian wine bar. The eponymous Gerald, a grumpy British punk rocker with a long career in every aspect of hospitality, shares the business with Mario Di Ienno, an unflappably soothing presence. Always-excellent wines by the glass are opened upon request rather than from a set list, and the food is some of the best casual European in the city. Geralds is also the only Melbourne bar with an international outpost (in San Sebastian, Spain), and exudes a personal, timeless comfort via vinyl records, lace curtains and handwritten menus. Despite Gerald’s cynical streak, he’s a hospitality guy at heart. His bar entreats us, as he says in his recently published book, to “Laugh, dance, be generous and loving, because that’s all there really is.”
