Ginjinha Sem Rival
In Lisbon, ginjinha is to drinks what pastel de nata is to sweets—it is part of the fabric of the city. One cannot leave Lisbon without stepping into one of the hole-in-the-wall ginjinha spots scattered by Rossio Square to sample the homegrown cherry liqueur. But among the many options, few can rival Ginjinha Sem Rival, which opened in 1890 and is still run by the same family (who distill the ginjinha themselves) in the same location. Abílio Coelho is the kind man behind the counter pouring the reddish liqueur to the queue of visitors that includes regulars and tourists alike. (The latter are easy to distinguish: They are the only ones who order the version served in a chocolate cup.)
