Updating and strengthening the power grid is one of the country’s most critical infrastructure needs, including here in Oregon. This is important work as we further electrify our lives, our economy and move towards a clean energy future.

How our integrated power grid works
PGE’s grid includes three distinct, yet integrated systems that work together to power our lives, businesses and neighborhoods today and into the future: generation, transmission and distribution.

Powering growth and progress
We’re leading the way to bring reliable, affordable and clean energy to all while accessing grants, awards and other funding to manage costs. We’re committed to energizing progress and meeting the evolving needs of our region.
GRID OF THE FUTURE
PGE is investing in, and building, a clean energy future by providing reliable, adequate and affordable electricity to power our homes, economy and lives. This means addressing urgent, local needs is essential.
RELIABILITY
Just like you maintain your car or bike to ensure peak performance, we take the same care with our electrical equipment. We maintain and upgrade generation facilities, substations and transmission and distribution equipment so we can deliver reliable power with fewer outages.
GRID RESILIENCE
Modernizing the grid to meet customer needs and deliver safe, reliable energy requires ongoing investments. Upgrades to legacy infrastructure increase resilience during extreme weather events and provide dependable, consistent energy to power communities.
Bolstering service reliability and increasing resilience is a team effort when we plan and implement projects across our service area. Often, PGE personnel and trusted contractors conduct work before construction begins, and during each construction phase, to successfully and safely complete a project.
In your neighborhood and across the region
Before we begin work, it’s important to first understand the area, so our surveyors perform a land analysis and existing conditions survey to determine property and easement locations. For some projects, we’ll use drones or 3D laser scanning and modeling (LiDAR) to aid in the survey.
Right-of-way and easement location is an important component of land surveying. Wherever possible, we do our work in the utility right-of-way. But sometimes our equipment needs to cross (or be placed on) private property. This could require an easement. With an easement, landowners give PGE the legal right to install electric equipment and access that equipment to maintain and upgrade it in the future.
Like you, we feel lucky to live, work and recreate in Oregon’s beautiful, natural places. We know how important it is to protect these areas and the fish and wildlife that call them home. That’s why we take our job as environmental stewards seriously. Our biologists and environmental specialists do on-the-ground work to study and improve conditions for fish and wildlife. We also partner with agencies, non-profits and Tribes to expand our reach. Environmental stewardship is a key part of our permitting process for PGE projects.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
AND PERMITTING
LAND SURVEYING AND EASEMENTS
We’ll always work with you to find a suitable replacement for any impacted trees, shrubs or plants. Our goal is to restore the property to its original condition or better. There are limitations in some instances — for example, if large trees are within the easement area. In these instances, PGE will work with you to find a suitable alternative that meets clearance requirements and doesn’t impede access to the lines for inspection, maintenance and repairs.
VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
Bucket trucks and cranes help us replace poles and allow crews to safely reach power lines. Low-impact drilling equipment is used to minimze disruption when replacing poles. And for bigger projects, we’ll bring in the necessary equipment to get the job done.
BUCKET TRUCKS AND CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
Traffic crews will direct traffic around construction and work site areas to keep everyone safe.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Power is generated by hydroelectric facilities, wind and solar farms, and gas power plants. Battery Energy Storage Systems provide vital reserves which support reliability.
GENERATION
Distribution is the final step where energy is delivered to neighborhoods, homes and businesses.
DISTRIBUTION
Transmission lines are the super-highways of the energy grid. They deliver energy from where it’s generated to substations and the distribution system, to help serve customers.
TRANSMISSION
Our commitment. Your energy.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND PERMITTING
We consider a range of variables so power lines have a safe path from where power is generated to the homes and businesses they serve. Sometimes, we'll need to remove a tree or brush if it’s encroaching into our clearance area or showing signs of damage or disease. We make these determinations with the help of certified arborists and forestry staff. If action is needed, we’ll reach out to you to discuss removal and potential replacement.
