Looking back on 125 years of
Loyola High School
Loyola’s rich history began in 1896 and is based around the Jesuit mission of forming “men and women for others” who are intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to doing justice.
The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) founds Loyola College at 2084
St. Catherine St.
The Loyola Alumni Association is created. Alumni involvement is an important part of the Loyola community, during school activities, fundraisers and celebrations.
Loyola moves to Notre-Dame-
de-Grâce and the surrounding borough develops, in part,
thanks to the establishment
of an esteemed Jesuit college
on 50 acres of farmland.
The Loyola Mothers’ Guild is founded. Along with the Parents’ Association, family organizations help organize community
events and are essential
to the Loyola community.
The foundation of the Hall of
Merit pays tribute to Loyola graduates and associates who
give back to society. Inductees include Georges Vanier, the first French-Canadian Governor General of Canada and Noubar Afeyan,
the co-founder of Moderna.
Loyola moves to 7272 Sherbrooke St. W., where the school resides today. The building boasts modern facilities including science labs, gym and exercise rooms, an indoor track, library and media centre.
During the Ice Storm, Loyola served as a shelter for 300 local residents who lost power. Community service represents a vital part of the Loyola experience and students take part in a Christian Service Program, serving both the local community and abroad.
The Eric Maclean Centre for the Performing Arts is built. The auditorium hosts annual events including school plays, concerts and talent night, which provide an outlet for Loyola’s diverse Arts programs and showcase the student body’s creative side.
Marcelle DeFreitas is named Loyola’s first female president, ushering in the 125th anniversary of the school and its future as a Jesuit apostolate.
The first Ed Meagher Winter Sports Tournament is held to foster a spirit of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Loyola’s robust athletics program is available to all students.
