For the team at Ackard Contractors Ltd., the honour of winning gold for the seventh year in a row in the Home Renovator category is a distinction for which they can be very proud. “It’s something coming right from the customers, and it’s nice to see the public recognize us for what we do and what we’ve done for many years,” says a gracious Aquilino Naccarato who, along with co-owner Richard Plamondon, established Ackard back in 1982. We laid off a lot of staff when COVID-19 first hit, but now we’ve recovered everybody, and we’ve actually got more staff than we did before, so that’s a good sign.” “Plus, our pricing has been really aggressive this year. We recognize that, and our trade partners have been great about recognizing that as well,” says Naccarato. “So it’s really the time to do home renovations now because we don’t know what the future holds.”

When I heard that Golden Rice Bowl was the Readers’ Choice Gold Winner in the Dim Sum Restaurant category for the seventh year in a row, I had to see for myself what Edmonton readers have been raving about. When I arrived with my family, I was immediately taken by the ambiance. The lighting, chandeliers, traditional artwork, and decorative wall hangings create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for dining. Once my family was seated, a gracious server took our order and patiently explained the dishes to my children, who were eating at a Chinese restaurant for the first time. In what felt like only a brief moment, our table was filled with dim sum delights. My children especially enjoyed the chicken noodle soup, with its rich broth and generous portions of chicken, while my wife was thrilled with the chicken chow mein and its pleasing array of fresh vegetables. And I was left overjoyed with their signature beef sirloin and cashews — a savoury, mouth-watering dish made with 100% Alberta beef. It was incredible. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection, and the mushrooms were a supreme compliment to the dish. The service throughout the meal was also outstanding, as they ensured my family had plenty to eat and drink through the duration of our meal. Miranda Lau, owner of Golden Rice Bowl, is proud of the distinction her restaurant has earned with readers and clientele year after year. “It’s an honour to keep up the tradition,” she says. “Getting to know our customers has been the best part of my job, and many of them have become cherished friends.” This is evidenced by the array of thank-you cards posted near the entrance by grateful patrons who’ve dined-in and even used Golden Rice Bowl to host their wedding receptions. Unfortunately, the pandemic has caused a steep decline in dine-in business this year, though Lau and her team have exceeded AHS standards to ensure they’re running their restaurant safely. “We’ve worked hard, and we’ve invested a lot to keep this restaurant open,” she says. Everything about the restaurant is evidence of the pride that Lau and her team have in what they do. The restaurant itself is tidy and clean. The seating is spacious and comfortable. And the food is delicious because, as Lau says, they use the freshest ingredients and have one of the city’s best chefs in the kitchen. If you’ve never been to Golden Rice Bowl, or you haven’t visited in a while, you really need to go for lunch or dinner now. This enchanting family-run establishment needs our support so that Edmontonians can continue to relish its delightful flavours for many years to come.

For five years, Edmonton’s Japanese Village has held onto the Gold Winner spot in the Readers’ Choice Japanese Restaurant category, and perfectionist general manager/chef, Tenkai Luong, still thinks his restaurant could use improvement. “We always have to strive to be better in the cooking, the flair, and the restaurant service,” says Luong. “It is thrilling to be the Gold Winner and it sort of redeems all of our hard work.” Japanese Village has been around in Edmonton since 1972, specializing in the Japanese teppanyaki, or “iron plate grilling,” style of cooking. Customers are not only greeted with a delicious meal but are able to watch the chef cook the meal on the grill in front of them. The menu ranges, offering dishes like a mouth-watering Filet Mignon or a delicious chicken Teriyaki. “It’s a dinner and a show,” says Luong. “They can see the entire process from the beginning to the serving, so that gives them a little bit of an assurance that the food will be tasty and prepared properly.” The chef also may throw in a few sleight-of-hand tricks mixed with lightning-speed chops and flips.“ They [the chefs] are expected to juggle in front of customers, and some of the chefs enjoy having conversations as they’re cooking, so it’s really a different experience every single time.” The menu at Japanese Village has gone through a few recent changes, and Luong is excited that they can now serve Japanese Miyazaki-gyu A5 Wagyu striploin. “I recommend they order a normal New York strip sirloin and a Wagyu so they can taste the difference,” Luong says. “The taste is different, and the Wagyu isn’t for everyone, but we take pride in our steaks and not only being a Japanese restaurant, but also a Japanese steak house.”

Owner and stylist, Joanne Astle, takes pride in her luxury salon, humbly boasting that her salon offers an elevated experience with the best products — Balmain and Sachajuan, to name a few — in the business. “We took our inspiration from some of the salons in Europe,” she says. “All our interior finishings are imported from Italy, and we really took the time to put the money behind how this place looked and feels. We’re in the beauty industry, and it should look beautiful and feel beautiful in here.” MAVN Hair also was in the top three for Salon Interior Design for the 31st annual Contessa Awards, the gold standard in Canadian beauty awards. Due to the salon’s unique circular layout, stylist booths were already spaced two metres apart, making it far less disruptive to meet COVID-19 protocols. “We have added 15 minutes to every client’s appointment to make sure that surfaces are sterilized between appointments, and masks have become part of our dress,” says Astle. “We try to keep an upbeat rhythm in the salon, but COVID seems to be the talk of the chair right now.” In her 35 years of hairdressing, Astle says she has never seen such unusual booking patterns, but she is thankful for the continued loyalty of the salon’s clientele. “There’s a reduced urgency right now and fewer special events, so that has changed our business for sure,” she says. “The weddings, graduations, our Christmas parties and our Christmas specials we would do, that’s all changed. We’re seeing people stretching out their appointments a little more again because they’re working from home.”

So, I believe that’s why we have a loyal following.” Even before the pandemic, the team at Mercedes-Benz Edmonton West was constantly adapting to the ever-changing landscape of the automotive industry. “We’ve had to sort be the chameleons of the automotive industry,” says Hebert. All in all, Hebert and his team are grateful that they are able to remain open and serve their customers. “We believe there’s a special vibe in our store, and this adds value to the entire experience. Normally, it would be a time for Edmontonians to wander around Whyte Avenue, West Edmonton Mall or the various shopping opportunities Downtown to hunt for presents. However, with COVID-19 still in full-swing, and Alberta facing a large uptick in case numbers, retailers are hoping that people in the city will be taking advantage of the many local online and curbside pickup options when buying gifts for their loved ones.

The holiday season usually represents big business for Edmonton's local stores, but this year, it's likely they will take a hit. However, there are some ways for Edmontonians to still patronize local businesses and contribute to the city's local economy while also staying safe and stemming the spread.

On the customer side, adherence to the rules set out by the different levels of government and the businesses themselves is important, says Nick Lilley, interim executive director of the Downtown Business Association. Similarly, if potential customers are experiencing any symptoms of the disease, they should stay home.

THE CUSTOMERS

There are some obvious places businesses can start: following health guidelines, going above and beyond in their efforts to keep people safe, and also being adaptive and nimble to all the curveballs the pandemic throws at them. Businesses tend to already be very good about enforce things like mask-wearing, person-limits in store, appropriate signage on-site, offering socially distant spaces and hand sanitizing. "The Downtown businesses, in particular, are doing such great work to put safety front and centre in all of the experiences they're offering to patrons," Lilley says. "At the end of the day, there are incredible businesses who really do need people's support during these challenging times. I think everyone is rising to these challenging circumstances to offer great value to the people who want to come out and enjoy those opportunities."

THE BUSINESSES

Local businesses have also gotten creative when it comes to offering services in a safe manner. Many local stores have tried to shift their offerings online, on top of having an in-store experience. Setting up digital commerce sites has become a growing focus for many local companies, says Lilley. The same is also true in the food world. Many restaurants have started offering their food online, either through their own websites or sites like SkipTheDishes. Others are offering take-out or curbside pick-up options. "It's about providing options during these challenging times to fit the level of comfort that consumers are looking for, then us all working together as businesses and consumers to follow these guidelines and being as safe as possible," Lilley says. The Downtown Business Association, the City of Edmonton, the University of Alberta School of Retailing and Digital Main Street are also working together on a new project to support many downtown businesses and around the city to enhance their digital offerings.

GET CREATIVE

There are plenty of ways for active families to enjoy outdoor activities. The whole gang can get their ski or snowboard gear at Ski Cellar Snowboard, along with all the winter gear needed to keep warm at a facility such as Banff Sunshine Village. Families who aren’t quite as sporty can get their outdoor fun fix at the Calgary Zoo, which is currently offering timed tickets to ensure guest safety. And while Calaway Park is closed for the season, it offers some of its best deals on season passes over the Christmas holidays.

GET OUTDOORS

It's important that Edmontonians try to patronize local businesses as much as possible while remaining safe and comfortable — and keeping people working at the businesses safe. This is likely to be a hard winter for everyone involved, but it's possible to stay safe, find great gifts and support Edmonton-born shops. And, Lilley says, every purchase counts. "There are very straightforward ways in which people can make an incredible difference to our entrepreneurs, for these businesses who breathe so much life into our community "We can all be community builders in some respect by continuing to support our local business environment, and taking every opportunity we can in this holiday season in particular to make this one that's really focused on the Edmonton economy and pushing us through COVID."
