The history

Taza Park is bordered to the south by Weaselhead Flats Park, a delta with wetlands where the Elbow River feeds into Glenmore Reservoir. The 585-acre park, incorporated in the 1980s, is believed to be named after the Tsuut'ina Chief Weaselhead, who was in power at the time Europeans came to what is now known as Western Canada.

The three interconnecting community villages that comprise Taza — Taza Park, Buffalo Run and The Crossing, are driven by the Tsuut’ina First Nation’s vision for a sustainable future, rooted in respect for the land and its people. The development is guided by the Tsuut’ina Nation’s connection to its cultural, language and spiritual roots. As an example, Tsuut’ina Elders lead ceremonial blessings acknowledging the sacredness of the land and the importance of cultural integrity at milestone events for the development.

In 2014, 80 per cent of Tsuut’ina members voted to dedicate 1,200 acres of the Nation for economic development. To bring this ambitious dream to life, Canderel was chosen as a real estate and development partner — and Taza was born.

Taza, located on the border of southwest Calgary, the Municipal District of Foothills and Rocky View County, is easily accessible via Tsuut’ina Trail, a key route in the southwest Calgary ring road network. Alberta Transportation named the southwest leg of the ring road as Tsuut’ina Trail in 2017, recognizing Nation ancestors and “the hard work they put into the land; land known for significant cultural foundations, cultural identity and spiritual connections.”
