Total growth fell to $0.7Bn, new and protected brands saw a $4.8Bn decrease from 2016, and generics declined by $5.5Bn.
The impact of loss of exclusivity has been largely unchanged for the last four years.
Growth slowed in 2016 and declined by $5.5Bn in 2017. While generic prices had been going up, they are now trending drastically downward.
Generic growth had been a positive driver of growth from 2013–2015 as the combinationof fewer expiries and price increases lifted spending.
Protected brand net volume growth slowed in 2017 to $1.5Bn. This trend is in part due to earlier-launched brands becoming more mature or declining as they faced competition from generics and/or newer brands.
Protected brands added $5.2 billion to spending in 2017 just due to price increases. Significantly lower than the $18 billion of invoice price growth before discounts and rebates.
The largest drivers of net spending growth in 2017 were new brands on the market for less than 24 months. While they accounted for $12 billion in new spending, this is down from the historically high level seen in 2014-2016.
