the body needs rest and pause
Bahena-Benítez is a queer Mexican-Indigenous theater and film actor, dancer, poet, playwright and advocate. She moved to New York City feeling anxious, afraid and lonely, but pushed through her issues to develop a successful career. It wasn’t until a few years later, however, when she realized that her own needs were being ignored. “At some point, the body gets tired,” Bahena-Benítez said. “The body needs to rest [and] take a pause. I am now at that point where I’m beginning to relax and live in my authenticity and my truth.”

Agudelo is a dance and theater performance artist who empowers people to articulate their experiences through movement and speech. She, too, was taught by her mother that working “nonstop” was essential. “That’s what I saw [my mother] do, and that’s what I was doing too,” Agudelo said. “I was going crazy with the amount of pressure I was putting on myself. Then, something clicked. I had to break the cycle. I couldn’t continue to burn out and be another woman in my family who takes care of everybody and doesn’t take care of herself.”

When Sad Girls Club board member and impact advisor Muna Ikedionwu moved to New York four years ago, she was excited about what the city had to offer. But without a community or friends who she could go to for support, her mental wellness suffered. Ikedionwu said it’s important for brands like Chillhouse to give back to organizations that are connecting to the community in a meaningful way, so they can provide their services free of charge. “I’m glad to see that nowadays mental health is becoming more of an open conversation,” Ikedionwu said. “I can talk with my friends, family and other people in my life. Now, I have the tools to handle anything that comes my way.”

We see a life on social media that’s been carefully tailored. So, you never really know what someone is going through behind closed doors
Teen Advisor
For a long time, Olivia DeMartini, a teen advisor at Half the Story, thought “self-care” meant spending a couple of hours in bed scrolling through social media. She later recognized that social media wasn’t offering her the authenticity she wanted in her life. “I used to be caught up with my physical appearance,” DeMartini said. “I didn’t think of anything but wanting to fit in with my peers. We see a life on social media that’s been carefully tailored. So, you never really know what someone is going through behind closed doors. We're not what we post. We’re full people.”

Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton, self-described “Queen of Chill'' and founder and CEO of the self-care brand known as Chillhouse, understands how important it is when people of color support one another. It’s through that encouragement and the strengthening of those bonds that make it possible for brands like hers to create positive change in the Latine communities it serves.

Ramirez-Fulton’s story is a perfect way to kick off a video series collaboration between Remezcla and Target that showcases how some of the Latine-owned brands at Target are making a difference in the lives of young BIPOC women – Driven: From a Chillhouse to a Peaceful Mind being the first of two episodes. Target carries Latine-owned brands found on their Más Que platform.
“We care deeply about taking care of yourself, not only from a physical standpoint, but also your mental health,” Ramirez-Fulton said.

Ramirez-Fulton said that a major part of the brand’s message is to urge Latinas who need mental health services to reach out for help. There’s nothing embarrassing about admitting when your mental health needs a boost.
“As a Latina, we've always been taught to be tough and persevere and not be soft or vulnerable,” Ramirez-Fulton said. “I think it’s really important for the younger generation to know there's help out there and that they have a place they can go where they can speak their truth to someone.”
Ramirez-Fulton started Chillhouse as a way to combat the stresses of daily life. It’s no secret that most people equate beauty spas with relaxation. Today, the company provides a growing collection of formulated products that focus on helping people develop self-care rituals and beauty regiments in the comfort of their own homes. Beauty, however, isn’t Chillhouse’s only focus.
Two of these places where Latinas can find mental health support are Sad Girls Club and Half the Story. The mission of Sad Girls Club is to remove the negative stigma surrounding mental health; to provide mental health services to young women and girls who do not have access to treatment; and to create safe spaces to nurture and build a sense of belonging.
Half the Story’s mission is to fight for safe and healthy digital ecosystems across all platforms. Through its SocialMediaU program, the organization aims to “educate young people on the connections between emotional health and digital habits and transform their sense of self and their relationship with technology.” This includes the false beauty standards affecting young women when they log onto social media.
With the help of Chillhouse, both organizations are continuing their commitment to help fight mental health issues in our community. Chillhouse is dedicated to supporting them as they provide therapy and mentorship to those women in need of mental health services. The brand commits part of its proceeds to support the mental health efforts of Sad Girls Club and Half the Story.
“I felt the combination of these two organizations was a good one for Chillhouse,” Ramirez-Fulton said. “We want to do whatever we can to help amplify their message and advocate for mental health.”

The Latine-owned brands, carried at Target, are making a difference in Latine lives, not only with their products but through their support. Agudelo defines “self-care” as “non-negotiable acts of kindness.” She hopes others follow her blueprint and always make themselves a priority. “In taking care of yourself, you can serve your community so much better,” Agudelo said. “This is for the next generation.”

Manuela Agudelo and Katherine Bahena-Benítez are two women who would likely benefit from the services provided by Sad Girls Club and Half the Story. Both of them learned their strong work ethic from their parents. With that relentless spirit, however, sometimes one’s mental health can take a backseat to everything else.
Founded in 2017, Ramirez-Fulton got her inspiration for Chillhouse from her mother, who owned a spa in the Jackson Heights neighborhood in New York City.
“I grew up watching my mother work in a spa to owning three of her own,” she said. “My mother has more grit than anyone I’ve ever met in my life.”
