he hazy, fever dream of the 1970s juxtaposed with the stark reality of rock ‘n’ roll: welcome to the world of Daisy Jones and the Six. The series, an adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s
best-selling fictional novel of the same name, chronicles the rise, lives, and legend of Daisy Jones & the Six, a band once the shining beacon of rock music only to abruptly burn out like fireflies in the glow of peak fame.
But more than that, it’s an old-fashioned cocktail of glam, celebrity, chaos, with a welcome heavy pour of unrequited love, heartbreak, longing-- everything in between that makes us human.
After all, it was partly inspired by a true story, the relationship between an iconic British-American rock band lead singer and the band’s lead guitarist. Reid became fascinated with everything they represented after watching an electric performance by the duo on MTV that had her curious about their closeness. “I wanted to write a story about that, about how the lines between real life and performance can get blurred, about how singing about old wounds might keep them fresh,” Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote in a personal essay for Hello Sunshine.
Born into privilege but ignored by her selfish parents, Daisy Jones is a spirited and enigmatic singer-songwriter who comes of age and rises to rock superstardom against the backdrop of the 1970s L.A. music scene.
Like the book, the adaptation’s approach embodies that blur. It takes place both back in the day and present day, with Behind the Music-like docu-style interviews with the band reflecting on memories of the past. The series is also EP’d by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine, and co-created with 500 Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. Will Graham co-showruns, and Brad Mendelsohn also produces. As for Taylor Jenkins Reid, she’s stayed close to its creation. "It's made me prouder of my book," Taylor says on Ellen Pompeo’s podcast. If you haven’t read the book, get ready for an intoxicating ride.

It’s all about the music. Led by producer Blake Mills, Daisy Jones and the Six’s debut album Aurora assembles a legendary crew today’s most prolific singers and songwriters, including co-writes from Marcus Mumford, Jackson Brown, Madison Cunningham, Taylor Goldsmith, Chris Weisman, and more. Aurora, recorded at LA-staple Sound City Studios with the help of Tony Berg, features musicians who’ve played alongside acts like Rilo Kiley, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, and more. Together, their talents come together to evoke the timeless, spirited energy of the 1970s, in a nostalgic classic that’s a natural entry to the quintessential canon of the time.
Here’s the first trailer for Daisy Jones and the Six. New episodes of the limited series drop on Prime Video every Friday.
