After Thompson left his midtown Manhattan hotel early in the morning, a masked gunman wearing a backpack approaches the executive from behind and shoots him with a partially 3D-printed pistol.

After the shooting, the gunman leaves the scene, running through an alley between West 54th and 55th streets. He was then captured in this security-camera photo on an e-bike heading uptown toward Central Park.

In one of the first photos released by law enforcement of the hooded gunman, he is in the back of a cab with a medical mask hiding most of his features other than his eyes and distinctive eyebrows.

Five days after the shooting, Luigi Mangione is arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and named as the primary suspect in the case. Today, he sits in a Brooklyn detention center awaiting his trial.
