Immersive Technologies
The Human in the Digital World
Immersive Technologies
Immersive technologies are leading-edge solutions, like extended reality technology, serious gaming, and virtual simulations, used to engage individuals in training programs and help them learn deeper and faster for better performance. If you are seeking accelerated training solutions for your enterprise, SAIC believes immersive technologies lie at the heart of the future of training.
SAIC’s immersive technologies augment the ways people interact with tasks and information. Advanced synthetic environments, or computer representations of the real world, provide new ways for people to learn and gather information, while systems adapt to learners based off biometric human performance and
analytic feedback.
Human Augmentation
By placing humans in environments where they believe they are actually experiencing certain conditions, locations, and environments, we create a suspension of disbelief and augment the users’ perception of their world.
Virtual Systems Perception
Our synthetic environments represent real conditions of the world that can be as finite as a person’s individual view or as large as the entire world, complete with the physics associated with object interactions.
Realistic Representation of the World
New information should be presented in new ways. SAIC delivers and presents information using modern platforms in novel ways, which not only encourages users to want information but also enhances how well they consume the information.
Modern Delivery Platforms
Pilot Training Next (PTN) revolutionizes pilot training through the use of modern, immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and human-machine interface (HMI). PTN is enhanced by modern modalities of learning and complemented by an understanding of cognitive behaviors.
After the first cohort’s success, SAIC supported PTN’s second iteration, which concluded at the end of August 2019. The second class comprised a mix of aviators from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and British Royal Air Force, as well as remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) pilots.
PTN captures and structures data, including performance data, biometrics, student-specific demographics, and additional data as required. Biometrics includes real-time analysis of each subject’s physical and cognitive state and changes over time. Information is displayed in real-time for instructor use, as well as stored for later analysis.
In summer 2021, Virtual Mission Trainer, the engine that drives PTN success, was awarded the IDC Future of Digital Innovation Award for developing innovative software that creates new value and augments internal digital workstreams.
Because of that teamwork, the U.S. Air Force was able to graduate PTN’s inaugural 2018 class in half the traditional undergraduate pilot training (UPT) time. The graduates, possessing a combination
of flying hours in the T-6A Texan II—the military’s primary aircraft for basic flight training—and training hours in the simulators, then transitioned to follow-on training in flying training units.

Virtual Mission Testbed (VMTB) is a digital engineering set of applications designed to enable systems engineering trade studies, systems design, concept of operations (CONOPS) development, and training for acquisitions engineers, operators, and sustainers. Simulated space mission operations familiarize key personnel with how operators assess complex problems and make time-sensitive decisions.
Designed primarily for the virtual environment, our flagship missile warning operational scenario demonstrates how our virtual reality (VR) and COTS (commercial off the shelf) technology can be used to integrate operations into the systems engineering and design process. As a key element of our training capabilities, the VMTB platform can allow users from remote locations to engage in virtual scenarios together, replacing tabletop exercises with dynamic, immersive mission simulations.
