BEAUTY
The stunning porcelain tile for which Crossville is known is more than just a pretty face. Crossville tiles stand the test of time. Supremely durable, non-toxic porcelain tile, made from naturally occurring materials, lasts some 50 years or more, making it inherently eco-friendly. And 37-year old Crossville is not new to the environmental sustainability conversation. On-trend with the current movement for companies to consider their carbon footprint and imprint on the earth, Crossville’s consideration of environmentally responsible sourcing, equipment, manufacturing processes, and product life cycle has positioned the brand at the forefront of environmentally sustainable design and manufacturing. With concern about climate change, global warming potential, and the impact carbon has on the environment, the brand has evaluated its energy usage and carbon impact, and is proactively making changes. As a result, Crossville has unveiled its first two carbon neutral products:
Civilization and Native Metal.
—Noah Chitty, Crossville’s director of technical services
Crossville’s new carbon neutral porcelain tile line called Civilization features variations of color and unique crystalline motifs that reference the aesthetic of basalt stone that formulated ancient islands.
Available in six colorways from light to dark, Civilization comes in a semi-polished or unpolished finish. These rectified porcelain tiles are made in the USA and come in 2x2-inch mosaic, polygon mosaic, and 12x24-, 24x24-, and oversized 24x48-inch tiles—the last of which affords the opportunity to create a dramatic effect on floors and walls. Civilization also comes in a standard bullnose and cove base to satisfy any design needs.
CIVILIZATION
Crafted by Crossville artisans, this new carbon neutral porcelain tile line with resin tile accents features an exceptional surface finish with metallic visual texture. Responsibly manufactured in the USA, Native Metal has earned Green Squared certification—the sustainability standard in the tile industry.
Available in a palette of hues from noble platinum to graphite black, the unpolished tiles and polished and unpolished accents come in sizes including 2x2-inch mosaics, mixed hex mosaics, and 2x12-inch metallic deco; 12x24-, 24x24-, and 24x48-inch rectified tiles; and standard bullnose and cove base.
Native Metal can create a dazzling impact on interior floors and walls, countertops, and exterior walls in residential and commercial applications. The porcelain tiles have a smooth, semi-matte, satin Cross-Sheen® finish for easy cleanability and extra durability in high-traffic areas.

The seeds for these new carbon neutral products were planted almost a decade ago, when Crossville completed its first energy usage assessment, which led to creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)—critical for the company to understand its environmental impact and the first step in setting environmental goals. By 2019, Crossville realized a 10% reduction in energy usage.
Crossville managed to achieve carbon neutrality with these two new products by investing in reputable global carbon reduction initiatives to offset the carbon emissions of these tiles. Crossville distinguishes itself from industry peers by considering the entire life span of its product when it offsets carbon emissions, while others only cover the carbon footprint through the manufacturing process. Crossville, instead, covers the carbon footprint of Civilization and Native Metal from its inception to raw material sourcing, transportation of those materials, and manufacturing to its delivery to a project, building life, and finally through recycling or destruction.
And while Civilization and Native Metal are Crossville’s first carbon neutral products, they certainly will not be its last. “We continue to identify more efficient and energy conserving projects in our manufacturing plants,” Chitty reports. “We are actively seeking new technologies and processes that will allow us to consume less energy per square foot of tile we produce, and therefore lower the overall embodied carbon in our product.” Learn More
“We want our customers to know that when they buy Crossville tile, they are not only purchasing the most sustainable floor or wall finish available, but they’re also making the most responsible purchasing decision from a low carbon, life cycle standpoint”

Crossville endeavors to attain a 30% reduction in its carbon footprint its tile’s carbon footprint by 2030
(over 2014 baseline values), and the company will reevaluate its environmental sustainability goals.
Utility supplier and Crossville partner Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is striving to become carbon neutral by 2050, which will greatly reduce the carbon footprint of Crossville’s manufacturing process.
Crossville completed its first energy usage assessment and created Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), establishing a baseline value.
Crossville realized a 10% reduction in energy usage, demonstrating that a path of carbon reduction in our facilities and operations was possible.
“Our main objective was to understand the actions necessary to further drive carbon reduction in manufacturing, as we believe that these actions lay the groundwork for the larger neutrality conversation.”
