Crypton in Situ:
A Versatile Performer
Because Crypton offers comprehensive performance with thousands of design choices, there’s always a perfect fit for any project. Crypton supports enduring style, creative freedom, and worry-free maintenance in hotels, schools, offices, hospitals, and senior living facilities.
Most people spend about 90% of their time indoors, and in that time, they look at, sit on, rub against, or even spill on textiles. So it’s no wonder that as designers, you put a lot of care and sensitivity into selecting upholstery, curtain, or panel fabrics—you want the colors and patterns to be just right, and for the space to look and feel good even after hundreds of people have used it. Plus, in an era where the building industry generates one-third of all the world’s waste, the last thing you want is for stained or worn out fabric to be thrown out, often with the furniture it’s on!
Over the last few decades, scientists have been on a quest to boost the performance of indoor textiles. In the 1970s and 80s this usually involved coating fabrics, but in 1993 Crypton made a breakthrough with the first viable stain-resistant fabric with properties that were inherent to the yarn.
Coatings and surface finishes continued to be used by other solution providers, however, until experts in healthcare started raising the alarm about the inadvertent ill-effects of those chemicals on human health. “Lurking beneath the surface can be a surprising number of pollutants,” Kaiser Permanente’s then-vice president of facilities planning and design, John Kouletsis, warned in an October 2015 press release about finishes in healthcare spaces.
This has turned the industry back to cleaner ways of providing stain resistance, with steady progress towards weaning the textile industry away from toxic ingredients. In 2008 Crypton was the first to receive EPA approval for a disinfectable fabric that doesn’t poison our ecosystems. That work has continued with the elimination of PFAS—”forever chemicals” that could make their way into our bodies and cause negative health impacts for generations to come.
Today, it’s possible to balance aesthetics and durability with wellness and sustainability. It’s easier to avoid picking the wrong fabric, and making the right choice matters more than ever before.
