Italy Hosts G7 Summit 2024
SITUATION OVERVIEW
The annual G7 Summit will be held from 13-15 June in Savelletri (Apulia region), Italy, with the heads of seven member states and the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission in attendance. Due to the high-profile nature of the summit and its attendees, security will be heightened in the area with road closures likely to be implemented near G7 meetings to control traffic and crowds.
The G7 leaders will use this summit to reiterate strong support for Ukraine. Host Italy’s priorities for the summit are Ukraine, the Middle East, engagement with the Global South, strengthening relations in the Indo-Pacific, AI, and – for the first time – migration. Diverging positions will persist on enforcing G7 Russia sanctions in third countries (especially in China), as well as how to further expand sanctions in the face of Russia’s economic resilience and circumvention tactics.
The following report uses Seerist features to provide an assessment of the security landscape in Italy and the Apulia region ahead of and during the G7 Summit.
MONITORING REPORT
Risk Ratings give an at-a-glance, qualitative assessment of current levels of risk to operations in a country. They are business focused and cover various categories including political stability and security issues such as unrest and terrorism.
Security Risks in Italy
The overall security environment in Italy is relatively benign. Nonetheless, there are challenges – particularly in southern regions, where violent crime is more common. Organized crime has historically been the most credible security threat to business, notably in the south. However, Mafia groups are increasingly concentrating on activities such as drug-smuggling and economic crime, which pose a less direct security threat to foreign business. Leftist terrorists have been less active than in previous decades, though remain a moderate threat. The country has been the subject of Islamist extremist threats and a number of arrests have taken place, most recently in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023, which saw Italy make several rounds of arrests of Islamist extremists who oppose Italy’s support for Israel in the conflict. However, no confirmed attacks have taken place to date.

Explore Unrest and Crime Trends in Apulia Region with Verified Events
About 13% of all verified security events in Italy were recorded in the Apulia region throughout April and May 2024. Unrest events were verified in the region’s capital, Bari, and the port city of Brindisi, with demonstrations related to the Israel-Hamas conflict and labor/trade union strikes that involved road blockades. Low-impact crime events involving the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were also verified across the region during attacks targeting shops and ATMs that resulted only in material damage. These crime events were likely related to extortion efforts by organized crime groups operating in southern Italy.
