So many people are being denied their existence and
their right to live and to be safe in the world. Just to exist.

Pride has long been about color, noise, and taking up space—about unadulterated joy and passionate protest. And rightfully so. The first Pride marches were held on the anniversary of 1969’s Stonewall Uprising, a series of LGBTQIA+ demonstrations that lasted six days. Same-sex marriage wasn’t legal, and gay bars were routinely raided by police.
But as we explore what Pride means in 2024, it only feels right to celebrate the beauty—and privilege—of existence.
Almost 10% of millennials identify as queer, and over 22% of Gen Z does. It’s been nearly 10 years since the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage was legal, and Congress passed a law further protecting marriage equality in 2022. Simply being is one of life’s greatest joys—when you’re allowed to do it freely and authentically, without judgment or justification. And in a world that demands so much of queer people, it’s also enough.

So show up as yourself, and revel in the way it feels. Wear the outfit. Kiss your partner. Post the photo that makes you feel like the hottest person on Earth. Sheer, happy existence is something we all deserve. And thanks to decades of heartfelt activism and hard-fought wins, it’s a privilege many of us now have the chance to experience.
At the same time, existence is something we still have to fight for, reassert, and defend. No one needs reminding that 2024’s an election year. And while we’ve made progress, there’s still so much further to go. Being yourself is an implicit act of resistance in a world that insists, all too often, on limiting LGBTQIA+ rights. As our cover star FLETCHER notes, “Showing up is the most radical act of rebellion.”
