ashion has more try-hards than ever before, and I’m not gonna lie, in trying to keep the vibe going, we are actively killing it. Everyone wants to be an insider. Nobody wants to be a fan. We are busy speaking in nudges and winks and layers of unspoken knowledge and an implication that we know it. You have to talk about clothes in ways that proves you know more, that you deserve to be there, that in a sea full of voices clamoring, it is you who deserves to be listened to above others. Coolness has a fickle flame, and the harder you try to keep it going, the faster it will go out.
The good news is, it feels like a new vibe is emerging. Art doesn’t work if it’s talking circles around itself instead of talking to the world it exists in. People are catching onto this. When I was a teenager, the only way out of my hometown was the internet. It’s where I found out about weird, niche fashion and movies and culture. It’s where I learned what people in big cities were doing. But that’s not true anymore. The best fashion inspiration is not on the internet—it’s on the street outside your apartment. It’s in the books and movies you’re seeing and the concerts you’re going to. It’s at your bodega, and it’s at the airport. It’s in your hometown’s Goodwill.
There’s a voice in my head that wants to explain further, but I feel like if I do, it will ruin the point. If you’re reading this, you might be someone who’s looking for answers about personal style, and I have to tell you the truth, which is that I don’t have them. I hope that sets you free.
