All in the Family
For many of us, our first introduction to beauty and style came from our mother — or a mother figure in our life. My mom has never worn a lot of makeup, but I still remember her visits from the Mary Kay lady, and the pink jars in her bathroom cabinet. I can recall every perfume she’s worn — Shalimar when I was young, Obsession when I was older, and more recently, Amarige (my favorite!).
When it came to discovering and developing my own beauty and style preferences, my mom gave me the space (and grace) to figure it out myself. I don’t recall a single instance of her questioning my clothing or makeup choices, although some of them were surely questionable. (Blue mascara, I’m looking at you!)
Mother-daughter beauty and style, in fact, is the theme of this year’s SheKnows Mother’s Day issue, and I’m thrilled to share a collection of stories that celebrate and explore it. Our cover stars, fashion veteran-turned digital creator Kara Mendelsohn and her 20-year-old influencer daughter Ella, are the perfect pair to feature. While Ella has nearly 3 million TikTok followers of her own, the duo have created a shared fan base by pairing up, with a video series where Kara styles Ella (as she did for this issue’s photoshoot!). It’s utterly watchable, a sweet, shared experience for the two, and also an example of a thoroughly modern element of parenting: raising an influencer. Kara and Ella share how it all started, and how it’s going, in our cover interview.
Also in the issue, we have an essay by actress Alysia Reiner on how thrifting with her teen daughter has built their bond, and a handful of carefully curated gift guides for every mom and mom-figure in your life. We hope you celebrate every one of them this year, and that you’re celebrated as well. As our other celebrity interview subject, Real Housewives of Dallas star Dr. Tiffany Moon, told us, “Every day should be Mother’s Day.” We couldn’t agree more!
