letter from our editor
What makes it so daunting now is a fear of the unknown — teens today are coming of age in a much different world than the one we grew up in, with a global pandemic, mass shootings, climate change, and a range of technology and gadgets we never even imagined. And so it is with great anticipation and consideration that we bring you our first-ever back-to-school issue dedicated to the tween and teen years.
Starring on the cover, actress and mother Poorna Jagannathan told SheKnows’s Executive Editor Erika Janes, “ . . . the most amount of growing I have ever done is in these teen years.” Mom to 17-year-old Anav, Jagannathan is experiencing change both on the personal and professional fronts, as she is preparing for the empty-nest stage of parenting and moving on from the award-winning hit show Never Have I Ever, which ended this summer. Read more about her next projects and how she’s handling the growing pains with her son.
Also in this issue, Parenting Editor Rita Templeton caught up with And Just Like That’s Nicole Ari Parker on how to stay on top of it all during back-to-school season; SheKnows’s resident family therapist Zuania Capó-Ramos talks about what to do when you don’t approve of your kids’ friends; and Contributing Editor and pediatrician Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez has a message about an energy drink that’s been marketed to teens. We also have the best backpacks, bras, and skincare for your big kids, and allergy-friendly recipes from Molly Yeh. Because as much anxiety as a new school year can bring, as Jagannathan’s character Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar in Never Have I Ever says, “I know, it’s scary — our lives are changing. But change is good. Change is necessary.”

The teen years are, perhaps, the most-feared stage of parenting. (Admittedly, this is coming from someone who’s only just graduating from the toddler years of parenting.)
