Over the past seven years, our teams have rebuilt 21 miles of I-4 in Central Florida. It is considered one of the most complex and extensive transportation infrastructure projects in the country and is the
largest infrastructure project undertaken by the state to date.
Key project milestones
Governor Rick Scott and representatives from more than a dozen local, state and federal agencies were present at the ceremony for the largest infrastructure project in Florida history.
Sustainability by the numbers
Community investment
Since 2015, SGL has made donations to local food banks for families in need and the homeless, including donating frozen turkeys during the holidays.
The I-4 Ultimate concessionaire’s initiative set aside $1.5M to fund permanent art installations throughout the I-4 Ultimate project area that are integrated into gateways, highway overpasses, pedestrian bridges, parks and streetscapes.
The beneficiaries included Altamonte Springs, Maitland, Orange County, Orlando and Winter Park.

This 18-foot-tall artistic display reflects the vibrant city of Winter Park. The various hues represent well-known aspects of the city famous for its small-town atmosphere, art fairs and peacocks. It is located on Fairbanks Avenue near I-4.

Created by Hunter Brown of Innovative Sculpture Design in Little Rock Arkansas, Solidarity is a stainless-steel installation that is visible when approaching Colonial Drive and Garland Avenue. Illuminated by an LED lighting system at night, two twisting forms are joined at the base and anchored by an arch symbolizing “strength, support, and thresholds in time.”

In 2017, the I-4 Ultimate project earned Envision Platinum certification from ISI. At the time, it was the first project in Florida to receive this recognition and was one of the largest Envision-verified projects.

SGL used fill dirt borrow pit locations, known as borrow pits or sandboxes, that represent a strong commitment to the environment and community.
Sandboxes
Our field teams were equipped with iPads which allowed them to access paperless project plans anywhere and at any time. This environmental efficiency puts over 32,000 documents at their disposal, eliminating the need to return to the office thereby reducing fuel consumption and the associated environmental footprint while dramatically reducing toner and paper usage.
Reducing waste
SGL maintained a 98.6 percent recycling level. As our team cleared a path for the new roadway and demoed the old, the concrete, asphalt, and steel were recycled and the trees and brush become bio-fuel or mulch. This dramatically reduced transportation footprints by creating shorter distances for material to travel and diverted waste from being sent to a landfill.
Recycling
SGL relocated dozens of threatened Gopher tortoises from the project path and continually monitored existing burrows throughout the project lifecycle. SGL relocated two protected Osprey nesting sites, cats, dogs, raptors, and more, and our crews were well trained in the signs of a wide variety of naturally occurring species and what to do should they encounter them on the site.
Wildlife protection and preservation
SGL used approximately 95 percent of heavy equipment, which meets Tier 4 EPA standards to lower emissions, fuel consumption and the associated environmental footprint.

Since breaking ground on our I-4 Ultimate project in 2015, the Skanska-led joint venture team has embodied our Be Better—Together value by putting the local community first. What began as a typical community investment initiative at our 21-mile project has transformed into something special. Throughout the project lifecycle, our team has engaged in over 50 community outreach initiatives.

Perhaps the most visually appealing interchange on the project, S.R. 436 features specialty lighting, decorative spires and a robust landscaping package.
Enhanced landscaping
Includes trees, bushes and native plants along the project. Also featured are buffer trees, palms, canopy trees, flowering trees and ground cover.
Texas U-Turns
At select interchanges, these allow drivers to U-turn without pausing at a light.
Decorative pylons
These Direct Connect Pylons include specially designed lighting to help guide motorists to direct connect express lane ramps.
Under-Deck Lighting
There is under-deck lighting on most of the bridges within the project. Colored lighting under the I-4 Church Street overpass provides a festive atmosphere, and the colors are adjustable to correspond to various events.
Storm management ponds
75 storm management ponds were built along the I-4 Ultimate project.
Single Point Urban Interchanges Allows motorists on two of the most traveled interchanges to move more effectively and safely while exiting and entering the interstate.
Bridge enhancements
Bridge supports throughout the improved I-4 corridor will feature a variety of enhancements, including foliage planters, pylons, and decorative architecture.
Custom medallions
Located at overpasses, interchanges and underpasses, custom medallions were specially designed to represent the various cities and municipalities.
Emergency Access Gates (EAGs)
10 EAGs are strategically located at the midpoint of express lane segments with more than two miles between slip ramps. The EAGs allow emergency responders access from the general use to the express lanes through the rigid barrier wall separating the two roadways.
Sensors, cameras and computer controled on-ramp signal lights
A combination of all are located at select locations through the busiest part of the downtown corridor. During peak hours and congestion, the lights will help with create smoother merging patterns and reduce slowdowns for mainline drivers.
Traffic sensors and traffic cams
Monitored in real-time and built into overhead sign trusses and other infrastructure.
Forward Thinking Communications Network
This will allow FDOT to deploy Connected Vehicle (CV) technology, as it becomes more commonplace.
State Road 436 Pedestrian Tunnel
A pedestrian tunnel under S.R 436 between Douglas Avenue/Wymore Road and I-4 adds a unique safety feature for those on foot crossing the busy roadway.
33 Digital Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) DMS communicate real-time traffic conditions.
