Progress Tracking with StructionSite by DroneDeploy
Partnering with Procore to Improve Workflow Efficiency
StructionSite by DroneDeploy has revolutionized photo documentation, enhancing project delivery for our teams. Initially piloted at our LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Terminal B Redevelopment project, StructionSite significantly reduced time spent capturing progress data and signifigantly improved progress tracking and quality control efforts. With over 6,000 photos taken at LGA, its impact during the COVID-19 pandemic was profound, enabling remote documentation and reducing on-site staff. Now deployed nationwide with over 3,000 active Skanska users, StructionSite continues to enhance efficiency, safety and transparency for our customers, providing unparalleled clarity by organizing data by location and date and linking it to Procore drawings.
360 Photography for Progress Tracking and BIM to Field Verification
Our team used laser scanning on several phases of the UVA hospital expansion project prior to performing. Prior to scanning, we opened existing parts of the building to reveal slab locations. This provided accurate information to architects, engineers and steel fabricators on how to develop and input existing conditions data into our models. The scanning ensured that we detailed the design and fabrication drawings to match the actual existing conditions of our building tie-ins. This led to accurate tie-in of the new steel, concrete and exterior facade to the existing structure. This efficient process saved time and money and mitigated impact to hospital operations. Our team also used coordinated BIM in-wall and above-ceiling medical equipment models to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Skanska and Procore partnered to configure their software such that project teams, design and trade partners, and owners can easily and intuitively collaborate to raise and resolve issues, document design changes, review and approve submittals, manage project documentation, view 3D models in the field and leverage system-native dashboards to make data-informed decisions. The result of our partnership with Procore has been a seamless transition for employees and stakeholders, enhanced workflow efficiency through searchability and document control and data-dense, real-time updates for proactive, reliable decision-making.
At the Portland International Airport site, Skanska installed a 2,200-piece, 18-million-pound prefabricated timber roof. The project team coordinated with regulatory authorities to operate drones in controlled airspace. Our team carefully planned all bi-weekly drone flights, working with trade partners and the owner to identify and prioritize current needs and new use cases. The result was a consistent series of holistic imagery and 3D models of project progress, offering more visibility and insight to the owner.
PDX Airport | Portland, OR
Over the past eight years, Skanska has tested multiple VR and AR tools, extracting valuable insights that inform its usage for the benefit of our project teams and customers. VR is predominantly used for design reviews with owners and architects, trade coordination meetings, feedback sessions with facility managers and lifelike digital mockups and virtual tours. In 2023, Skanska conducted a VR demo using Resolve for a major institution in New York City. The immersive VR experience allowed the owner and facility managers to preview the built space before construction was complete. Over four months, Skanska flagged and reviewed more than 250 design issues with the owner.
A Pragmatic Approach to Using VR/AR in the Field
For this healthcare renovation/addition project, our team demonstrated that making minor upgrades to the existing building would offer long-term cost savings by increasing energy efficiency and reducing the risk of moisture/water damage. This type of inspection would normally require two crafts people and six to eight weeks of planning and permitting. By comparison, the thermal imaging drone requires one licensed operator, who can perform inspections and generate reports same-day. The result is a much safer, more efficient process with high-quality, data-informed results that influence current designs and future planning/investment.

We used cmBuilder, a cloud-based site logistics tool, to streamline the $257 million Belmont High School project by enhancing collaboration among teams. With its user-friendly interface and powerful simulation capabilities, cmBuilder visually depicted and effectively communicated project plans, ensuring clarity and comprehension among all stakeholders. Senior Superintendent Manny Hoyo and his team leveraged cmBuilder's versatility across the project lifecycle to navigate complex construction and renovation phases seamlessly.
Democratizing 4D Site Logistics Simulations
Evercam, an AI camera provider, has significantly enhanced safety and efficiency at the Virginia State University construction site in Ettrick, Virginia. By using photo and video archives for incident investigations and training, Evercam empowers project teams to proactively address safety concerns and improve protocols. Additionally, Evercam's auto-detection of vehicle traffic streamlines delivery logistics, ensuring seamless operations on site. The integration of live video feed with the 3D model further enhances project management by providing real-time insights and enabling accurate monitoring of construction progress. Through Evercam's innovative solutions, Skanska prioritizes safety, efficiency and project success.

Skanska partnered with Dusty Robotics and tested their FieldPrinter for automated printing of drywall, mechanical, electrical and plumbing layout for a three-story, 70,000 SF mixed-use medical facility. Dusty’s autonomous robot printed multi-trade layout in a single pass directly onto the construction site surface. By creating a single source of truth for Skanska’s trade partners, we eliminated bottlenecks and conflicts and increased layout efficiency.
Mixed-Use Medical Facility | San Francisco, CA
HP SitePrint, an autonomous robot revolutionizing construction layout, has significantly enhanced productivity and accuracy at prominent projects, including the LIRR Train Hall Renovation in Penn Station, New York. Our team used SitePrint to print wall layouts over a 2,400-SF area in just 45 minutes, a task that traditionally took seven hours manually. By leveraging precise positioning from a Robotic Total Station, SitePrint eliminates human error and accelerates layout processes, allowing project teams to focus on critical activities like quality control. This innovative solution streamlines workflows and reduces schedules, demonstrating its immense value in optimizing project efficiency and success.
Penn Station | New York, NY
Custom built by our Data Solutions Team to meet the unique needs of our projects, the 3D Model Based Production Tracking Dashboard leverages data from Procore, P6 and Assemble to create Power BI visualizations that help teams track and monitor trade partner schedule, workforce and percent complete data in real-time. This supports earlier identification and intervention in the event of underperforming trade partners to help operations teams to deliver schedule certainty for our customers.

For over 15 years, our work with Houston Community College (HCC) has led to the delivery of projects like San Jacinto Memorial Building Historic Renovation, Missouri City Sienna Plantation Campus and more. Now, part of our partnership with HCC is going virtual. Recently, our team members partnered with HCC students and the school’s Reality Collab to create a digital twin of HCC’s Central Campus. One of the students who supported the development of the HCC digital twin said, "It’s a valuable map, essentially an urban planning model, which can show changes that HCC might want to make. It’s also a training model for everyone else—architects, engineers and teachers—and we can use it to simulate real-world scenarios within a safe environment."
