SKF Cooper save steelmaker over $350k+
A steel maker was experiencing reoccurring unplanned downtime due to failures in the locating spherical roller bearings in three of the mill’s converters. The installation time for replacement bearings was extremely long, resulting in unnecessarily lengthy maintenance periods. The steel maker turned to SKF to find a solution to the problem.
By having the three SKF Cooper split spherical roller bearings installed, the steel maker reduced mean time to repair by almost 70% and gained total cost of ownership savings that exceeded $350,000. SKF Cooper split spherical roller bearings were installed in the converters’ locating bearing position. These bearings are designed for safe, easy replacement with little disturbance to the shaft alignment. The reduced mean time to repair cut downtime to a minimum. Thanks to reduced maintenance periods and easier bearing installation, worker safety was also improved.
SKF Bearings Slash Maintenance Time at Colorado Mine
A 10-mile conveyor belt in a snowy mountain-side forest has an 18.5-inch damaged pulley bearing that needs replacement. However, installing a new standard bearing would be risky, expensive, and time-consuming, taking nine days and requiring dismantling of a wall and crane rental. The maintenance team at the remote mine is faced with a challenging situation to address the bearing issue within the six-day stockpile time limit.
SKF saved the day with the SKF Cooper sealed split spherical roller bearing 231S1808-2SRS, which allowed the reuse of the current housing. The old bearing was cut open and replaced with the new one, utilizing machined seals, a V-ring seal mounted directly on the bearing as a second barrier, and grease surrounding the bearing as a third barrier. No belt run-in was necessary after installing the new SKF Cooper split spherical bearing because the pulley remained in place, relieving belt tension during the replacement process. The entire operation took only four days, reducing the usual nine-day process. This switch not only improved worker safety but also decreased the mean time to repair (MTTR) by 55% and reduced installation and run-in time significantly.
