DUDE!
Say this, not that: Conversations that open doors
You find a suspicious white powder or gummy in your teen’s bag.
You read that your child’s idol has been caught taking drugs.
Your tween says: “This TikTok says weed isn’t addictive.”
During a gathering, a family friend jokes that “every teen experiments a bit”.
“You’re grounded! How could you do this?”
“I found this in your bag and I’m really worried. Can you help me understand what this is?”
“What do you think about it? Why do you think someone with so much going for them would take that risk?”
“Let’s see who posted it and what other sources say. What do you think after reading this?”
“Don’t argue with me, drugs are bad, full stop.”
“See? Don’t do drugs. End of story.”
Stay silent.
“I heard that comment about ‘everyone trying things’. Not everyone does, and I don’t expect you to. If you’re ever curious or pressured, I want you to talk to me so we can figure it out together.”
