A closer look at the
TUNNEL BORING MACHINE
Discover the intricate components of a TBM that work together to create Singapore’s underground tunnel network
Control room
Houses the control systems used by operators who monitor and manage the TBM's excavation, steering, and safety parameters, ensuring efficient and safe tunnelling operations.
Length of TBM
Measures about 100m – the length of two Olympic-size swimming pools – when including various components such as the supporting gantries, muck conveyor and ventilation systems.
Screw conveyor
Uses a rotating screw mechanism to transport excavated material from the cutterhead to the muck conveyor, which then moves the material out of the tunnel for reuse or disposal.
Segment erector
Positions precast concrete segments to form the tunnel lining – a reinforced structure that supports the tunnel – as excavation progresses.
Excavation chamber
Maintains a controlled pressure environment at the front of the TBM. This helps to stabilise the tunnel face and prevents groundwater or unstable soil from entering the excavated area.
Cutterhead
Comprises cutter tools that slice through rock and soil, creating the tunnel face, while breaking material into manageable pieces for removal.
Diameter of TBM
Spans up to 12.6m, which is about the length of a bus.
