ITM IRISH STALLION SHOWCASE 2023
Welcome to the ITM Irish Stallion Showcase 2023 in association with Racing Post Bloodstock. Enjoy a virtual tour of some of Ireland’s outstanding stallion farms, where champions of the Flat and National Hunt produce the superstars of tomorrow. The Showcase runs in conjunction with the ITM Irish Stallion Trail, which takes place on January 13-14 and will see 35 stallion farms across Ireland open their doors. The Trail and Showcase will again serve to draw the spotlight onto Ireland’s exceptional stallion roster and offer breeders and other interested parties the chance to assess Ireland’s world-beating stallions ahead of the breeding season. Thoroughbred sales in Ireland enjoyed an excellent year in 2022 as buyers from across the globe invested in quality Irish stock at all levels of the market. This success is directly linked to the first-class array of stallions we have standing in Ireland under both codes. From proven producers to rising stars and exciting new additions, breeders from anywhere in the world can find an Irish stallion to suit any mare or budget. This year there is a record number of 35 farms participating in the ITM Irish Stallion Trail, demonstrating the strength in depth of Ireland’s formidable stallion roster. From some of the sport’s most significant global operations to smaller family-run studs, Irish farms consistently produce the goods and are an invaluable part of Ireland’s rural economy. We hope you enjoy both this virtual tour of Irish stallion farms and the in-person ITM Irish Stallion Trail. The exploits of Jet Away’s early progeny mean the sire’s name is on the lips of NH breeders when it comes to County Wexford-based Arctic Tack. Breeding has long since superseded farming at owner/manager Eoin Banville’s 300-acre family operation, whose first stallion Heron Island had Cheltenham success. From a top Juddmonte family, Jet Away has covered three-figure books in each of his first six seasons and the son of Cape Cross has started in auspicious fashion. Montjeu stallion Ol’ Man River looks the part; the Beresford Stakes winner’s oldest crop are now five. Another very exciting addition to the Arctic Tack roster is Dee Ex Bee, who looked every bit a National Hunt stallion in the making in his racing career has his first foals due this year. A gutsy second in Masar’s Derby and a distinguished career as a stayer after that marks him out as one to watch for the future.

Set in the stunning surroundings of the Mount Juliet estate on the banks of the River Nore near Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ballylinch boasts a long and proud tradition as a source of excellence to many generations of Irish breeders. Renowned for its select stallion portfolio, Ballylinch is now owned by John and Leslie Malone and has been overseen for three decades by John O’Connor. A five-strong team for 2023 is headed by Lope De Vega, who has established a global reputation with G1 winners spread across four continents. Also appearing on the roster are G1 sire New Bay, Classic Sire Make Believe, Arc winner Waldgeist and new for 2023, the G1 winning son of New Bay, Bayside Boy. It is also an outstanding nursery, with a broodmare band numbering over 70, housed both at Ballylinch and sister farm Castlemartin Stud.

Numerous successful stallions have stood at the Flood family’s Boardsmill since the County Meath-based stud was founded in 1935 by the late Jack Flood on the banks of the River Boyne, four miles west of Trim. One of the longest-serving independent stallion farms in Ireland, Boardsmill has been responsible for a multitude of major jumps winners, with a series of Cheltenham Festival scorers to the fore from the progeny of sires like French-bred pair J’Accours and Trouville in the early days through to hugely popular Furry Glen and Orchestra towards the end of the 20th century and the current team featuring Poet’s Word, whose first crop are three-year-olds in 2022. Newest addition to the roster is Sumbal, a Gr.2 winning son of Danehill Dancer.

Burgage Stud has recently taken on Fascinating Rock, standing him as a dual-purpose sire, with the horse aiming to fill the sizeable boots of former Burgage stalwart Shantou, John Gosden’s first Classic winner, who sadly died last year after a remarkable 18 seasons on the County Carlow farm’s stallion roster. Burgage Stud’s picturesque family-run farm, originally converted from a working farm by Terence Vigors in 1946, has a tremendous NH heritage thanks to Shantou and the wonderful Bob Back, while current stallion Jukebox Jury is a G1-winning source of winners under both codes. The son of Montjeu’s virtues have been advertised on the Flat by top-class G1-winning filly Princess Zoe; with Triumph Hurdle winner Farclas being his most high profile jumper so far. Studmate Sea Moon has made an outstanding start to his stud career. His first crop were 5-y-o’s in 2022 and he is already sire of two black type mares from his first crop of only 23 foals. He averaged e40,500 at the 2002 Goffs Land Rover Sale.

Mirage Dancer, a Group 1-winning son of champion sire Frankel, has covered over 160 mares to date, including the dams of Paisley Park, Sir Gerhard, One For Arthur and Labaik. Bred by Juddmonte, he is one of four black-type performers out of Matriarch and Beverly D Stakes heroine Heat Haze, a sibling to fellow Group/Grade 1 winners Banks Hill, Cacique, Champs Elysees and Intercontinental, as well as top sire Dansili, out of blue hen Hasili. Hunting Horn, a Hampton Court Stakes and Moonee Valley Gold Cup winning son of Camelot, who also placed in the Belmont Derby Invitational and the Prix Niel, was the Leading First Season Sire at last year’s Goffs December NH Sale with an average price of over six times his covering fee. He is closely related to the late High Chaparral, sire of Champions under both codes. High Class 2YO Alkumait, the quickest ever winner of Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes (faster than Dark Angel and Harry Angel), covered 110+ mares in his first season. The fastest son of Showcasing at stud, he is a half-brother to outstanding two year old Chaldean and also a half-brother to a Million Guineas foal in 2022, making him one of the best value young sires standing in Ireland.

Castlehyde Stud offers a combination of high class flat and national hunt stallions. The flat roster is spearheaded by Starspangledbanner who enjoyed an annus mirabilis in 2022 both in the sales ring and on the racecourse with no less than four Group/Grade 1 winners. The latest season also saw more top-level success for Gleneagles courtesy of Highland Chief in North America and Classic prosect Royal Scotsman here in Europe while Sioux Nation made a fantastic start to his stud career siring no less than 45 first crop two-year-old winners including seven group horses. A powerful NH team at the Fermoy base includes Champion jumps sire of 2021/22 Yeats along with fellow Ascot Gold Cup winners Westerner and in Order Of St George. Dual Group 1-winning miler Maxios, from a top Niarchos family, is already responsible for winners at the highest level under both flat and National Hunt rules, while the roster also includes St Leger star Kew Gardens. Eagerly anticipated are the first foals by Authorized’s Irish Derby and Royal Ascot winning son Santiago.

Coolmore is renowned as the world’s foremost bloodstock operation. Built up from the mid-70s mainly via big-money US purchases from the Northern Dancer line, Coolmore boasts a long list of Classic winners and champions on its past and present rosters headed by legends like Sadler’s Wells, Danehill and Galileo. A formidable stallion band for 2023 includes the upwardly mobile Wootton Bassett, the increasingly impressive No Nay Never along with his brilliant son Blackbeard, and several more proven Group 1 sires like Australia, Camelot, Churchill and a hugely promising son of Deep Impact in Saxon Warrior. An exciting year lies ahead for Calyx, Magna Grecia and Ten Sovereigns whose first 2-year-old runners get a chance to prove their worth. Record-breaking Prix du Jockey Club winner Sottsass and triple Group 1-winning miler Circus Maximus both have their first yearlings selling next autumn and also eagerly awaited are the first foals by the breath-taking French Guineas, French Derby Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes winning St Mark’s Basilica. Complementing Coolmore’s hallowed main base at Fethard, Co. Tipperary is Castlehyde Stud in Fermoy Co. Cork as well as branches in America and Australia.

It’s the ITM Irish Stallion Trail on Friday and Saturday, so time for my annual plea to attendees to make space in their schedules for some of the smaller studs that are throwing open their gates. Coolmore, Darley and Ballylinch Stud are breathtaking in their size, scope and wealth of stallion talent, but you will be guaranteed as warm a welcome from those operations off the beaten track, and see similarly smart sires too. In fact, in my experience, you can often have more unguarded and open conversations with managers and staff at those operations that are less overrun with other visitors. And who knows, one of those chats might even lead to a cut-price nomination deal. So where should you head this weekend? Let’s take a virtual trip around Ireland, travelling clockwise from Dublin. Derrinstown Stud will likely be busy this time around, with last year’s impressive Haydock Sprint Cup winner Minzaal on show before his first season covering at the Shadwell-owned farm. His studmate Awtaad doesn’t deserve to be overshadowed, though, after supplying last year’s Group 2 winners Al Qareem and Anmaat and expensively sold fillies Bellosa, Create Belief and Mohjatty. Queen Elizabeth II Stakes hero King Of Change, who stood his first two seasons at Derrinstown, has now moved north-west to Micheál Orlandi’s Starfield Stud, which has another new face this year in Dewhurst runner-up Dubawi Legend. Lemongrove Stud nearby is home to one of the most intriguing newcomers to the stallion ranks anywhere in Ireland this year, in Tosen Stardom, a Japanese-bred son of Deep Impact who won a brace of Group 1s in Australia. Boardsmill Stud continues its decades-long service of supplying credible commercial stallions to National Hunt breeders with Court Cave, Poet’s Word and Sumbal, while Tara Stud is showing off its homegrown US Grade 1 winner River Boyne. Social media devotees take note: Co. Meath might also contain the most photogenic stallion in Ireland, with the idiosyncratically marked Kool Kompany standing at Clongiffen Stud. He also makes serious appeal for breeders, of course, as a precious son of the remarkably accomplished jumps sire Jeremy, as does his covering colleague on the farm Austrian School, a classy half-brother to jumps legend Tiger Roll. There is no end of star names available to see in the corridor of studs that are opening in the thoroughbred county this weekend. In the space of just an hour spent at Kildangan Stud you will see Blue Point, Earthlight, Ghaiyyath, Naval Crown, Night Of Thunder, Profitable, Raven’s Pass, Space Blues and Teofilo – each and every one a Group 1 winner, many of them champions and one or two of them among the most exciting stallions in the world. The Irish National Stud’s roster includes one of the oldest sires anywhere in Europe, in the stately breed-shaper Invincible Spirit, and some younger names who will hopefully assume his role as a reliable source of big income for the operation in Lucky Vega, Nando Parrado and Phoenix Of Spain. The commercially astute Yeomanstown Stud is home to another doyen of Irish breeding, the ever-reliable Dark Angel, as well as exciting newer faces Invincible Army, Shaman and Supremacy. Rathasker Stud continues to offer its clients a range of credible budget sires, with Bungle Inthejungle, Coulsty and Gregorian currently on the roster, while Sunnyhill Stud is showing its promising young jumps stallions Lucky Speed and Fifty Stars. However, the place in Kildare I’d have been making a beeline for this week if I’d been able to go on the trail is Aidan Sexton’s Sweep Lane Stud. As one of the only stallion farms in the county that I’ve never visited, it holds a certain mystique for me, and I wouldn’t mind having a nose at the bargain-basement offerings Le Cadre Noir and The Irish Rover. Ballyhane Stud and Burgage Stud in and around Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, provide the perfect stop-off point between Kildare and the south-eastern counties, but they are of course much more than a convenient break from driving. Joe Foley’s Ballyhane is one of only two studs heroically offering extended opening hours of 9am to 5pm on both days, but then it’s worth pointing out that approaching visitors can be seen from a well-placed stool in the Lord Bagenal Inn just over the road. Here you can see the admirably prolific Dandy Man; one of my picks of the best value sires in Ireland, Elzaam; and the satisfyingly sibilant trio of youngsters Soldier’s Call, Sands Of Mali and Space Traveller. Burgage Stud meanwhile houses what I like to think of as the thinking man’s (and woman’s) selection of National Hunt sires, as they don’t tend to cover huge numbers but often return very good strike-rates: Jukebox Jury, whose first Irish-bred four-year-olds race this year, Sea Moon, who is making stealthy headway as a useful source of jumpers, and the interesting Fascinating Rock. Ballylinch Stud on the beautiful Mount Juliet estate in Co. Kilkenny will draw industry professionals, with a stallion roster that comprises big-hitter Lope De Vega, the upwardly mobile New Bay and that horse’s newly retired QEII winner Bayside Boy, as well as Make Believe and Waldgeist, but also racing fans with a keen sense of history, as you can see The Tetrarch’s box with its mosaic floor. Ballylinch being a rare exception, this corner of Ireland is about jumps breeding. Elsewhere in Kilkenny are two homes of recent champion National Hunt sires: Whytemount Stud, where Stowaway went from being ignored to overrun with mares and topping the table, and where Affinisea is now being strongly supported; and Knockhouse Stud, where Beneficial was built into a big success and where Derby and Arc hero Workforce and young guns such as Boscaccio and Waldkonig now reside. Castlefield Stud, a more recent addition to the roll of thoroughbred stallion studs in Ireland, is doing its damnedest to be the next base of a champion National Hunt stallion, by offering well-bred high achievers Hunting Horn and Mirage Dancer to the market. It also threw its hat into the ring with a Flat sire in 2022, and was rewarded by Alkumait becoming a half-brother to Dewhurst winner Chaldean later in the year. Head east to Wexford for Arctic Tack Stud (the other stud showing nine to five on Friday and Saturday), to see Jet Away, a dab hand with point-to-pointers and bumper horses, as well as Dee Ex Bee and Ol’ Man River, and Lacken Stud, where the extraordinary Sandmason story played out and Derby runner-up Khalifa Sat plies his trade. Kilbarry Lodge Stud is in Waterford, and we’ll get to that county soon as we head west across Ireland, but let’s deal with Con O'Keeffe's farm first as it is further east. I can see it being a popular stop this year, as it has just gained the dual Derby winner Harzand, and it also stands the in-form Diamond Boy and well-bred Pillar Coral and Success Days. Heading back inland is the main attraction of the ITM Irish Stallion Trail for many travellers: the chance to glimpse behind the gates of Coolmore, the pre-eminent breeding concern in Ireland and home to the champion sire every year for more than three decades until Galileo claimed his most recent title in 2020. Since Galileo’s demise, the operation’s fortunes are resting more on the strapping shoulders of No Nay Never, who will be available to see alongside his newly retired son Blackbeard and his freshman son Ten Sovereigns. Australia, Camelot, Churchill, Saxon Warrior, Sottsass, St Mark’s Basilica and Wootton Bassett are just a taster of the other celebrities on show here. Enjoy Coolmore while in Tipperary, but don’t forget Kedrah House Stud also in the county. It boasts one of the best-bred stallions in Ireland in Rich History, the Dubawi half-brother to Kyprios, Search For A Song and Free Eagle, and the productive veteran Well Chosen. Springfield House Stud is in the north of Tipperary, not far from the Kildare studs on the M7 motorway. The operation’s resident stallion Unfortunately, a welcome son of the short-lived Society Rock in active service, fired in a high strike-rate of two-year-old winners from his first crop last year. Coolmore’s National Hunt offerings are housed in Castlehyde Stud and Grange Stud, near each other in Fermoy, Co. Cork, and The Beeches Stud in Co. Waterford. Reigning champion National Hunt sire Yeats heads a large roster at Castlehyde (which also includes a fair few capable Flat names, not least Starspangledbanner), while luxury jumps stallion Walk In The Park stands at Grange alongside Capri, Getaway and Vadamos. Joint world champion Crystal Ocean and Classic winners Soldier Of Fortune and Wings Of Eagles are meanwhile among the main sights to see at The Beeches. The Cashman family’s Rathbarry Stud outside Fermoy is another of those farms that might welcome a larger influx of visitors this year, as it will be showing off its globetrotting and multiple Group 1-winning new recruit State Of Rest alongside another icon of Irish breeding in Acclamation. The operation’s jumps offshoot Glenview Stud, just down the road, also has a big draw on its books in the shape of Blue Bresil, one of the most talked about stallions of the moment thanks to sons Constitution Hill, Blue Lord and Royal Pagaille. The Fermoy area is also the location of David Stack’s Coolagown Stud, where there is a new stallion in the shape of Sea The Stars’ multiple Classic-placed son Storm The Stars, but the same old unique reflections on life from the farm’s proprietor. A new player in the stallion game here is Donal White’s Foxwood Stud, which is showing its interesting continental imports Night Wish, Racinger and Saintgodrel. Heading back east you find The Old Road Stud, where Cloudings ruled the roost until his recent death. Its roster is now headed by St Leger winners Arctic Cosmos and Scorpion, plus new addition Ilaraab, a dual Group 3-winning son of Wootton Bassett. Even further in an easterly direction is Woodfield Farm Stud, where Frankel’s three-parts brother Bullet Train (pictured above) and that sneakily smart source of winners Curtain Time can be found. A few studs opening for the ITM Irish Stallion Trail are out on a limb geographically, but they could be incorporated into travel itineraries with careful planning. Either way, hopefully breeders and enthusiasts local to them will show their support. In the west of Ireland, Claremount Stud in Co. Clare has Richmond Stakes winner Barraquero, while Roveagh Lodge Stud in Co. Galway is home to Fuisse, Monitor Closely and The Gurkha. Make sure you consult the full list of studs and map on the official ITM Irish Stallion Trail website when planning your trip, as some farms are open only on certain days or at certain times, with a few available by appointment only.

Based in Maynooth, County Kildare, the internationally renowned Derrinstown Stud is the Irish arm of the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s celebrated bloodstock operation which also encompasses the Shadwell estate in the UK and Shadwell Farm in the US. Between them a plethora of household names have carried the late Sheikh’s famous blue-and-white silks on all four corners of the globe. Minzaal is a new addition to the Derrinstown stallion roster in 2023. He retires to stud as the highest-rated sprinter in Europe after his emphatic 3 ¾ length Group 1 Sprint Cup win at Haydock. The son of Mehmas was also placed in Group 1 company at two, three and four as well as being a Group 2 Gimcrack winner at two. He stands alongside Awtaad, a proven black-type sire, whose 2022 was highlighted by a Group 2 double on Arc weekend with the high-class pair Anmaat and Al Qareem.

A new entrant into the stallion game for 2023, Donal White’s Foxwood Farm will offer three stallions to breeders. New to Ireland is Racinger. Free of both Sadler’s Wells and Monsun blood, the four-time Group winner is sire of Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 runner-up Farouk d’Alene, as well as El Barra, a Grade A and Grade 3 winner over fences. He joins Night Wish and Saintgodrel, who covered their first Irish mares last year. Night Wish, the Group-winning son of Sholkohov, whose oldest crop are five, is already sire of Listed winner Odiago, multiple winners Ile de Jersey (with Nicky Henderson) and Oh Marie, as well as debut Irish point scorer Omaha Wish, who was bought for €100,000 by Dan Skelton. He covered over 100 mares in 2021. The roster is completed by Saintgodrel, the only son of Saint Des Saints at stud in either Britain or Ireland. Unraced, his dam is Loumie, runner-up to Nickname in a Grade 1 at Auteuil.

The Magnier family has been involved in NH breeding since the 1850s and many of Coolmore’s litany of Champion NH sires have been stationed at the famous Grange Stud in Fermoy, Co. Cork. Having earned prominence by standing Cottage, the sire of Vincent O’Brien’s three-time (1948-50) Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Cottage Rake, Grange was the sole stud farm of significance in the family business when the young John Magnier took over before he added Castlehyde in 1973. Among former inmates were 14-time Champion Deep Run, and other hugely significant jumps sires such as Be My Native, Supreme Leader, Oscar and Milan. The current roster is headed by Walk In The Park whose exploits on the racecourse are matched only by those in the sales ring. Two sons of Monsun also feature in the shape of proven Grade 1 sire Getaway and emerging star Vadamos while the second crop foals by Irish Derby and Doncaster St Leger winner Capri proved equally popular to the first.

Tom Meagher of Kedrah House Stud says: "We are delighted that Rich History is joining Well Chosen. Kilbarry Lodge Stud is a National Hunt Stud farm situated on the western outskirts of Waterford City. National Hunt Stallions have stood at Kilbarry Lodge Stud since 1997 and we are grateful to the breeders who have supported our stallions down through the years. We are thrilled to announce the addition of Harzand to our stallion roster. A dual derby winner by the top class Sea The Stars from a wonderful Aga Khan family, he has all the attributes to be an exceptional national hunt stallion. His exceptional national hunt foals were well received making him the third leading sire by average and median at the Tattersalls November 2021 NH foal sale. Success Days by the ill-fated Jeremy has made a blistering start at stud with the quality of his sale topping foals catching the eye at the recent foal sales. On the back of this and the unparalleled success of his sire Jeremy as a sire, he is one of the most talked about new National Hunt Stallions and we expect him to be very well supported in 2022. Pillar Coral comes from one of the best Juddmonte pedigrees sharing his dam Coraline with Champion French sires Martaline, Coastal Path and Reefscape plus Beat Hollow and Kingman in his second dam. He is producing all bay foals with great size and scope and good action and we now await his 3 year olds in 2022. Diamond Boy is now entering his fifth breeding season in Ireland and despite his few runners due to his small French crops, his winners to runners strike rate is high with 15 Black Type Horses from just 4 Crops of 80 runners. His progeny continue to attract high prices at the sales. We are excited by his recent youngsters winning on the track and look forward to his 3 year olds in 2022. The farm runs a broodmare band and their ofspring in combination with a herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus cows. Our aim is to produce top quality national hunt horses and the stud consigns horses at the principal National Hunt auctions. As a family owned farm, we look forward to welcoming and assisting breeders old and new in 2023 and hope you have a safe and successful year.

Rathasker Stud is situated on 400 acres of top quality Kildare land. Kildare has long been regarded as one of the finest locations in the world to bred high-class bloodstock. Rathasker Stud is a family run business with a reputation of excellent horsemanship. Coulsty has covered over 250 mares in the last two seasons and has been used by all the top breeders. From an initial small book of mares he produced a Group 1 QEII Stakes winner in Shantisara and a Princess Margaret winner in Santosha. He is a stallion whose statistics match up with the early careers of some of the leading stallions at the moment and many breeders have been keen to capitalise on that. Bungle Inthejungle is a proven source of speed - already producing winners of such races as the Nunthorpe, the Lowther and the Molecomb Stakes. He added two new Stakes winners in 2022 - Manhattan Jungle and Funny Money Honey. Gregorian is a prolific source of black type - in 2022 Princess Shabnam won the Listed Flying Fillies Stakes, Wahaaj was 2nd in the Gr.3 Solario Stakes and Gregorian Chant added to his Stakes winning tally with more black type in the Gr.2 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes, the Gr.2 Eddie D Stakes and the Gr.3 Lure Stakes. RATHBARRY STUD has been built on the principle of providing a personal service and high level of expertise at a reasonable cost. Rathbarry Stud has progressed steadily in its 85-year history to become an industry leader since Paul Cashman stood his first stallion Royal Pom in the 1930’s. In the late 1970’s renowned stallion master the late Liam Cashman decided to invest in stallions to breed potential champions on the flat. His uncanny eye and feel for a horse ensured some very shrewd judgements in purchasing young stallions including former greats: Barathea, Taufan, Alzao etc. We were very fortunate to acquire our exciting new stallion prospect STATE OF REST at the beginning of 2022 fresh from his wins in the US Gr.1 Saratoga Derby and the AUS Gr.1 Cox Plate. Under the expert guidance of Joseph O’Brien, he made an excellent start to 2022 by winning the Gr.1 Prix Ganay in France and then putting the icing on the cake with his convincing victory in the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. It is no surprise that some of the most successful breeders in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have invested in him and with their support, he must be an odds on prospect for a successful stud career. In 2022 ACCLAMATION continued to be an ever deepening influence on thoroughbred breeding – siring the Champion Romantic Warrior in Hong Kong; his stallion sons delivering 20 Group/Grade 1 winners and his daughters producing 27 Individual Stakes winners. Having seen how KODI BEAR upgraded his mares in his first seasons at stud, it was no surprise that both his 2021 & 2022 books of mares, were the strongest so far in terms of both quality and quantity. Therefore it makes sense that this is the year to use him to capitalise on the quality of the stock he has to run for him going forward. JAMES GARFIELD was one of the fastest 2 year olds of his generation and trained on to be a successful 3 year old. From limited opportunities, he has sired two black type dual winning performers from his first crop and had an overall strike rate of 72% winners/placed horses to runners. This strong start to his stud career was reflected at the 2022 yearling sales where his second crop sold to some of the shrewdest agents and trainers in the business.

Coolmore’s NH division in Co. Waterford, The Beeches Stud is one of three offshoots hosting a strand of the operation’s quality band of NH stallions alongside Grange and Castlehyde. The retirement in August 2020 of dual Champion Flemensfirth after 23 seasons left some sizeable shoes to fill but hopes are high his successor is already on-site in Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Crystal Ocean, who topped the world rankings for 2019 alongside Enable and Waldgeist, and has already had some excellent sales results. Galileo’s eight-length Irish Derby-winning son Soldier of Fortune continues to prove popular while Mahler has broken into the top five NH Sires in the current season. Epsom Derby hero Wings Of Eagles is enjoying an excellent strike rate with his early runners while two interesting young prospects were added to the roster for 2022. A 3,400,000 Guineas yearling purchase from a family replete with Group 1 winners, Mogul scored twice at the highest level while In Swoop, a son of the much-missed Adlerflug, won the German Derby and finished a close second in the Arc.

Based at Kells in County Kilkenny, Ronnie O’Neill’s Whytemount Stud gained renown in the NH world as home to the late rags-to-riches stallion Stowaway, whose talents continue to be advertised five years after his death by top jumping stock like Monkfish and Put The Kettle On. Another statistical phenomenon is already occurring at Whytemount, with current resident Affinisea being the busiest sire in Britain or Ireland in 2021 and 2022, covering382 mares. Breeders have no doubt felt encouraged to support the stallion due to his wonderful pedigree, as a Sea The Stars three-parts brother to Irish Derby winner and accomplished jumps sire Soldier Of Fortune out of a half-sister to another top source of National Hunt stars in Sholokhov, and because he has the looks to match – as proven by his €850,000 price tag as a foal. What did you make of trade at the sales in 2022? Extraordinary and a credit to everyone in the business that we maintained such vibrancy for thoroughbreds when other industries struggled. Goffs ring turnover was the highest in our history by some margin and was 20 per cent ahead of 2021. This is very encouraging and demonstrates the hunger for quality Irish and British bloodstock of all categories from a global audience. All that said, it was undeniably tougher at the lower end and it behoves us all to work together to increase viability and opportunities for every horse with initiatives like the innovative IRE Scheme. What are you looking forward to most this year? Every sale as I live to auction. Our life revolves around attracting horses to sell, compiling the next catalogues and then promoting them to the widest audience with the ultimate purpose of auctioning each lot. I get a huge buzz out of the sales process and delivering for vendors, notwithstanding that there are inevitable frustrations from time to time. What are you most apprehensive about for 2023? Losing my voice. Which new sire in Ireland excites you the most? Blackbeard looked a star and I think he could be very exciting. Who would you rate as the best value sire in Ireland for 2023? Dandy Man and Cotai Glory are two that appeal in the sales ring and deliver on the racecourse. Dandy Man appears to be getting better and better, and Cotai Glory is a young sire definitely going places. Can you give us a young horse to follow for 2023? It’s linked to the new sire question but it is hard to recall a better-looking yearling than Blackbeard’s sister at Orby 22. That said, I will be following every young horse that passed through our sales rings as another thing that truly excites me is when a Goffs graduate wins, especially on the big days – Flat or National Hunt, I love seeing them win!
Welcome to the Racing Post US stallions showcase, put together in conjunction with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders, Inc. and Keeneland Association, stakeholders of the US-Bred campaign, and designed primarily to offer an exclusive window to some of the top turf sires based in Kentucky—and one in California
What did you make of trade at the sales in 2022? Trade was very strong throughout the year with unbelievable home and international demand at every level. What are you looking forward to most this year? I am most looking forward to our Derby Sale and select store sales. We have so many Derby Sale graduates competing at Grade 1 level at the moment, so the Dublin Racing Festival, Cheltenham etc will be very exciting. What are you most apprehensive about for 2023? I try to stay positive with all things sales-related and on the back of a strong year in 2022 we would hope for a similar trend in 2023. Which new sire in Ireland excites you the most? It would be easy to look at the obvious but my National Hunt sire to follow is Affinisea. He has very nice stock and I think he is one to follow. On the Flat I am very much looking forward to seeing Blue Point's two-year-olds on the track. Who would you rate as the best value sire in Ireland for 2023? For me one of the best value sires in Ireland is Dandy Man. Year on year they perform well at the sales and he gets the results on track also. Can you give us a young horse to follow for 2023? I have to follow a Tatts graduate, and I really like Streets Of Gold. He was a September Sale yearling who went on to win the Super Auction Sales Race. I think he is progressive and tough and will make a lovely three-year-old.

What did you make of trade at the sales in 2022? I thought it was very solid for the Flat yearling sales, as can be seen by the significant rise in average and median figures. We had to adjust our budgets several times to buy the horses we wanted; thankfully we did!! On the other hand, the National Hunt foals were very selective, the sires who are performing well on the track were all sought after but it was patchy trade otherwise. What are you looking forward to most this year? We are so lucky to be working in a super industry with great people, it’s always good to get out racing meeting friends old and new. Also that our purchases keep running well and performing at the big festivals. What are you most apprehensive about for 2023? I am concerned about breeders breeding from mares that really are not good enough to be covered. Which new sire in Ireland excites you the most? Magna Grecia had some lovely yearlings and we were lucky to buy a filly out of Viola D’Amour. We loved a colt in Book 2 which exceeded our budget out of Fasnela! Invincible Army had some lovely yearlings also, and we were lucky to buy two nice colts by him. Who would you rate as the best value sire in Ireland for 2023? Teofilo stands out at €30,000, having produced a Group 1 winner from each crop he has had, including two in 2022! Can you give us a young horse to follow for 2023? National Hunt - Ascending, who finished second first time out over hurdles at Leopardstown over Christmas, trained by Henry de Bromhead. Flat - It’s All About You, who won a good two-year-old maiden at Newbury in October trained by Harry and Roger Charlton.
What did you make of trade at the sales in 2022? The trade for stock at the autumn sales was good if you had a correct, good-looking horse; pedigree was of course a help but if the animal didn’t tick the first two boxes they were passed over. Way To Paris's first crop of foals passed these testing conditions at both Tattersalls Ireland and Goffs. What are you looking forward to most this year? Surviving! What are you most apprehensive about for 2023? The rising costs of nearly everything, including feed, hay and straw. I hope they stop rising, as 2022 prices compared to 2021 seemed to be 20-25 per cent higher. Which new sire in Ireland excites you the most? I’m very excited about my new horse Storm The Stars, he is a gorgeous looker with a walk to match and by Sea The Stars. His first crop turned four this year and he should be very popular. Who would you rate as the best value sire in Ireland for 2023? Without doubt it must be Elzaam at Ballyhane, he produces good lookers, they leave a profit and they can run! Can you give us a young horse to follow for 2023? Your Own Story, by Shantaram, with Lucinda Russell, and Good Land, by Blue Bresil, with Barry Connell.
