Aamilah is in her fourth year of studies and works in a non-profit where she is actively making the STEM field more accessible to diverse groups. She is passionate about seeing young women enter the field of science and has co-authored a book to spread a love for science to children regardless of race and gender.
Alana is studying Nursing at Alcorn State University.
Living in a rural, disadvantaged town, there haven’t been many opportunities for Alana. Growing up with a single mom, she has helped take care of her brother and the animals on their farm. Alana is very smart, caring, hard-working, and we have no doubt she will make a great nurse.
Alyssa is studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences with the University of California-Berkeley.
Alyssa is very aware of the gender gap in tech. Alyssa became a volunteer assistant for her former AP Physics teacher, joined PixelHacks, where she helped organize all-female hackathon events, hear from industry speakers, created tech projects for social good, and was a volunteer writer for Science/Technology magazines.
Aryan is studying Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin.
After suffering a major setback in his swimming career, Aryan entered the world of speech and debate and learned that motivation, passion, and hard work were key to overcoming adversity. Aryan has competed on one of the best Speech & Debate teams in the country.
Aya is studying Information Technology at Duke University.
Rooted from her experiences and learning by example, Aya became a leader. She co-founded Eastside Black Girls for Change, leading opportunities for black elementary school girls to have a sense of mentorship and sisterhood from those that look like them. Aya is giving young girls the social-emotional guidance they need.

Delaney is interning this summer with Calgary, Alberta Infrastructure team. Engineering has taught Delaney how important it is to be the voice advocating for those who feel they don't belong in places where they want and deserve to be. There is a place for everyone in STEM; this is a mission Delaney will live throughout her life.
Briana is studying Animal Sciences at Mississippi State University.
Briana has a form of cerebral palsy, and because of this, she continuously has to overcome the obstacles of discrimination, ignorance, and lack of resources by advocating for her needs, vocalizing the truth, and not being persuaded by fear tactics to go home.
Allen is studying Engineering at Princeton University.
Allen is interning this summer with Houston, Texas’ Infrastructure team. Allen sought to address the limitations of disability access and treatment through what he knew best: engineering. As his work progressed, he developed CAD models, wrote XML files, and eagerly waited for scaled 3D prints while taking care of his family members who suffer with mental and physical disabilities.
Ethan is studying Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus.
Ethan is interning this summer with Washington, DC Buildings team. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Ethan was re-elected to Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) by his peers twice, serving a total of 18 months. Ethan was proud to play such a central role in helping his scout community stay connected throughout such a trying period, and the lessons he learned in flexibility, leadership, communication, and friendship are invaluable.

Isabella wanted to join the robotics team in middle and high school, but family obligations stood in her way. Even if it was inaccessible, people were willing to listen. Isabella wrote emails, earned sponsorships, and worked diligently to create a chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at her school.

Having the confidence to overcome any challenges that come his way has only made Christian stronger. He found success in graduating from high school as valedictorian and being admitted to Stanford University— a proud moment for Christian’s mother—who was happy to have seen him prosper after coming from an impoverished and crime ridden neighborhood.
Hannah is studying Geology at the University of Canterbury.
Being passionate about the environment is why Hannah went into Geology. She has always loved getting dirty, climbing mountains in national parks, and digging holes to search for 'fossils'. Hannah placed in multidiscipline adventure races, hiked hundreds of kilometers, and taught herself how to surf and snowboard. From a young age she knew where she belonged.
Dante is studying Mechanical Engineering at Rice University.
Dante found that his hardships opened a path for him to work harder than most students his age. He became involved in community service, designing engineering projects, and serving as President of his high school's robotics team. Dante discovered his passion for the aerospace industry and hopes to one day be the lead designer on aerospace projects such as rockets, spacecraft, or experimental planes.

Elizabeth was raised as an optimist who aspired to emulate Malala Yousafzai and Katharine Johnson. Elizabeth is continually reminded that she has the power, capacity, and desire to alter things because of the women in her family who instilled in her a lifelong compassion and taught her the workings of the systems she grew up in.
Samantha is studying Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia.
Samantha learned that in structural engineering, only 2.9% of professionals identify as female. Samantha’s experiences have prepared her to overcome the obstacles in engineering due to a lack of female representation. She has learned the best way to overcome misogyny in a male-dominated field is by empowering other women and will continue to promote inclusivity and respect throughout her career by mentoring and educating others.
Jasmine is studying Microbiology/Bacteriology at the University of Florida.
As a Type 1 Diabetic, Jasmine has a strong desire to study the microscopic world. Jasmine understands the importance of understanding how organisms affect the human body, and her decision to pursue a career in research eventually led her to investigate cutting-edge interdisciplinary scientific foundations in Microbiology and Cell Science.

Her past and present roles include undergraduate fellow at the Media, Inequality, and Change Center; Poet-in-Residence for The Heritage Society; and Silverman Fellow for the Netter Center for Community Engagement. Katrina aspires to evoke passion and intellect to make this world a better place.

K’yana is not daunted by challenges. After growing up in Jamaica and having to apply for scholarships to complete high school, K’yana took a gap year to work and save up some of the funds she needed to apply to university. She now welcomes challenges and faces them head on.

Growing up in a Tonga, Kenith’s father valued the connections he helped to create within the family and community. During high school, Kenith has become the community-minded person his father once taught him to be. 'Takanga 'etau fohe' (‘stronger when together’) is not just a proverb, but words Kenith live by.
Gavin is studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne.
Gavin experienced negative and discriminative attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ group within the aerospace engineering field he was in. Since 2020, Gavin and his friends started a non-profit for the LGBTQ+ community where they run workshops, give access to the world’s best resources, and have gained the support of local parliament members.
Laci is studying Biomedical Engineering at Stanford University.
Being biracial, Laci has felt split between two worlds. After years of feeling alone, Laci learned more about her African culture. Laci found friends who supported her and joined the Black Student Union where she learned more about her culture and to appreciate both the beauty and the hardships.
Nuell is studying Biology at Joliet Junior College.
Nuell fell in love with biology as a child, with an insatiable interest for the physiology of living things, specifically plants. Her goal is to promote healthy living and correct common misconceptions like all bacteria are bad bacteria. With knowledge of the applications of plants in biotechnology industries, Nuell will revolutionize plant uses.
Raiyana is studying Chemical Engineering at Laurentian University.
After immigrating to Canada after high school, Raiyana supports herself financially through two part-time jobs. While receiving high grades in all her courses, Raiyana is also an executive member of the International Students Club, ambassador for the zero-waste policy, and volunteers for the Chemistry Club, Meals on Wheels, Good Neighbour Project, and Acclaim Health.
Manny is studying Computer & Information Sciences at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo.
Manny was mentored by his pastor on how to be financially sustainable, be time-efficient, and develop realistic approaches that would overturn his previous setbacks. Manny became more involved in community leadership which led to starting a non-profit organization called New Lamp which sponsors Kenyan orphans with computers and educate them on personal finance and general education.
Matthew is studying Artificial Intelligence with Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
TikTok changed Matthew’s life. After attending a high school with limited science classes or clubs, Matthew learned through TikTok how to get into MIT. He applied to highly selective summer programs to learn STEM hands-on and make him a better fit for MIT. The cycle of learning, applying, and teaching became addictive and ultimately, rewarding.
Mya is studying Art, Music, Drama, and Education at the Tisch School of Arts.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Mya thought she would have to change her career. Instead, she was inspired to continue after meeting the broadway cast of The Lion King and hearing their stories of struggle. Mya believes the feeling of doing what you love is the feeling you must chase forever.
Sifallah is studying Biology at the University of Texas at Austin.
As an American-Muslim who emigrated from Algeria with his family, Sifallah expected xenophobic attitudes. But instead of crumbling under the negativity, Sifallah banded together with other prejudiced victims and demanded action. This has ultimately morphed him into the individual he is today.
Sabrina is studying Computer & Information Sciences at the University of Victoria.
As she continues pursuing her Doctoral degree in computer science, Sabrina is continuing to engage with her local community to demonstrate the importance of computer science skills to diverse individuals. To put these efforts into action, Sabrina has co-founded the local Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Student Chapter.
Scholarship recipients of 2023
Our goal with the Equity and Diversity Scholarship is to show we believe in STEAM programs and want to encourage more students that their aspirations are achievable—we want the next generation to have the opportunity to pursue their higher education goals. The 2023 Scholarship saw 44 students from Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, United States, and New Zealand receive funding for their continued education. Along with the Scholarship, we have seven paid internships within our Infrastructure, Buildings, and Water teams in North America.
The students are passionate about their studies and future careers which are in a wide range of disciplines including computer programming, medicine, psychology, engineering, artificial intelligence, journalism, architecture, microbiology, animal sciences, and more. We recognize the value and advantages of diverse ideas within our communities and are committed to providing a platform to support the next generation of leaders and champions in our industry.

Jude believes that cancer is a mere fraction of a person’s life. It’s easy to forget when one’s mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. Jude wants to be a medical device engineer to de-sign tools that can help cancer patients with their mobility; he wants to remind them to take a walk occasionally, to remember that there’s so much more to life than a disease.

This prompted Jeet to establish Kalpana (Imagination), a STEM-focused Entrepreneurship and Technology Club. He hoped to provide students new to STEM with hands-on learning experiences through the club's workshops, sessions, and competitions.

Jordan's initial educational aspiration was to complete high school and be able to find employment. With his knowledge and resiliency, he is now passionate about changing the world and pursuing a career in medicine. He intends to work for Doctors Without Borders so that he may assist as many people as possible.

Ian has tried to educate people on LGBTQ issues and topics as president of his school's Gender-Sexuality-Alliance, with a focus on the lack of representation of LGBTQIA+ individuals in STEM fields. Ian recognizes a clear underrepresentation, which motivates him to break the mold; he strives to overcome the odds and be the face of so many capable and talented LGBTQIA+ people interested in STEM fields.

Jaheim discovered through personal experience that everyone is fighting conflicts that you may not be aware of, and even the smallest acts of kindness may go a long way. With an interest in learning about the human body, its function, and the complex and varied ways it addresses diseases, Jaheim is driven to study medicine.
Jordan is studying Civil Engineering at the University of South Florida.
Jordan is interning this summer with the Florida Infrastructure team. Jordan discovered that his upbringing influenced his leadership and educational success, with aspirations of advocating for others and contributing to society. Jordan's long-term goal as a Highway Engineer is to have a societal impact by building safer and more efficient highways.
Jose is studying Architecture at Princeton University.
Jose has created a community garden for local people in his area, organized book donations and events for low-income families, spreads awareness of habitat destruction in Houston, organized events for UNICEF, created workshops that empower students to advocate for change, and helped increase civic engagement in communities made up of people of color by helping people to register to vote.

Kathrine knows that problem solving skills are necessary during the design and implantation of a project, and the complexity of those problems fascinates her. Kathrine seeks opportunities that serve her community: planting an orchard for the local Food Cupboard, repurposed construction materials into a garden, and led a team to custom build table and chairs for a local clubhouses.

Sonia has been financially independent and self-supporting since 2020. Sonia has been working as a Teaching Assistant for a Computer Science course to help pay for her cost of living. Rather than focusing on the cost of attaining her education, Sonia wants to focus on the education itself. Sonia is going to push her professional boundaries the way she always dreamed of.
Raat is studying Engineering Design Technology Program – Drafting at NAIT.
Raat’s interest in engineering started at a young age when he saw his father was lead electrical engineer at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. After his father designed and constructed high-voltage electricity posts all over the country which gives people in rural areas a chance to use electricity, Raat is inspired to design or build something useful for the communities and the country.
Shayna is studying Health Care Prerequisites at McMaster University.
Through her mental health struggles, Shayna has ignited a newfound empathy and compassion within herself. She learned just how important mental health is and has been inspired to explore this area in greater depth as a physician. Developing a patient perspective on mental health has informed her on the complex nature of mental illness, which will elevate her capacity to provide care when treating patients with mental health issues.
Zanna is studying Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Zanna is interning this summer with the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ChemRisk team. Zanna’s extra curriculars include raising $134,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, volunteer at Services Institute of Medical Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan, co-founder and current president or Eastern High School’s South Asian Club, and so much more.

Blessing completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program as part of her journey to becoming a medical doctor. Now, she wants other underrepresented minorities to know through her words and actions that if she can successfully complete the program, they can do it. Blessing’s love to serve the community and humanity is the source of her strength.

Most of Jeet’s peers at high school had not been exposed to hands-on STEM learning, but many were eager to learn. This prompted Jeet to establish Kalpana (Imagination), a STEM-focused Entrepreneurship and Technology Club. He hoped to provide students new to STEM with hands-on learning experiences through the club's workshops, sessions, and competitions.

Jaheim discovered through personal experience that everyone is fighting conflicts that you may not be aware of, and even the smallest acts of kindness may go a long way. With an interest in learning about the human body, its function, and the complex and varied ways it addresses diseases, Jaheim is driven to study medicine.

Jordan's initial educational aspiration was to complete high school and be able to find employment. With his knowledge and resiliency, he is now passionate about changing the world and pursuing a career in medicine. He intends to work for Doctors Without Borders so that he may assist as many people as possible.

Ian has tried to educate people on LGBTQ issues and topics as president of his school's Gender-Sexuality-Alliance, with a focus on the lack of representation of LGBTQIA+ individuals in STEM fields. Ian recognizes a clear underrepresentation, which motivates him to break the mold; he strives to overcome the odds and be the face of so many capable and talented LGBTQIA+ people interested in STEM fields.
Katrina is studying Journalism at Harvard.
Kathrine knows that problem solving skills are necessary during the design and implantation of a project, and the complexity of those problems fascinates her. Kathrine seeks opportunities that serve her community: planting an orchard for the local Food Cupboard, repurposed construction materials into a garden, and led a team to custom build table and chairs for a local clubhouses.

Jose has created a community garden for local people in his area, organized book donations and events for low-income families, spreads awareness of habitat destruction in Houston, organized events for UNICEF, created workshops that empower students to advocate for change, and helped increase civic engagement in communities made up of people of color by helping people to register to vote.

Zanna’s extra curriculars include raising $134,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, volunteer at Services Institute of Medical Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan, co-founder and current president or Eastern High School’s South Asian Club, and so much more.

Sonia has been financially independent and self-supporting since 2020. Sonia has been working as a Teaching Assistant for a Computer Science course to help pay for her cost of living. Rather than focusing on the cost of attaining her education, Sonia wants to focus on the education itself. Sonia is going to push her professional boundaries the way she always dreamed of.

Raat’s interest in engineering started at a young age when he saw his father was lead electrical engineer at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. After his father designed and constructed high-voltage electricity posts all over the country which gives people in rural areas a chance to use electricity, Raat is inspired to design or build something useful for the communities and the country.

Jude believes that cancer is a mere fraction of a person’s life. It’s easy to forget when one’s mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. Jude wants to be a medical device engineer to design tools that can help cancer patients with their mobility; he wants to remind them to take a walk occasionally, to remember that there’s so much more to life than a disease.
Nuell is studying Biology at Joliet Junior College.
Nuell fell in love with biology as a child, with an insatiable interest for the physiology of living things, specifically plants. Her goal is to promote healthy living and correct common misconceptions like all bacteria are bad bacteria. With knowledge of the applications of plants in biotechnology industries, Nuell will revolutionize plant uses.
Raiyana is studying Chemical Engineering at Laurentian University.
After immigrating to Canada after high school, Raiyana supports herself financially through two part-time jobs. While receiving high grades in all her courses, Raiyana is also an executive member of the International Students Club, ambassador for the zero-waste policy, and volunteers for the Chemistry Club, Meals on Wheels, Good Neighbour Project, and Acclaim Health.
Manny is studying Computer & Information Sciences at California Polytech State University – San Luis Obispo.
Manny was mentored by his pastor on how to be financially sustainable, be time-efficient, and develop realistic approaches that would overturn his previous setbacks. Manny became more involved in community leadership which led to starting a non-profit organization called New Lamp which sponsors Kenyan orphans with computers and educate them on personal finance and general education.
Matthew is studying Artificial Intelligence with Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
TikTok changed Matthew’s life. After attending a high school with limited science classes or clubs, Matthew learned through TikTok how to get into MIT. He applied to highly selective summer programs to learn STEM hands-on and make him a better fit for MIT. The cycle of learning, applying, and teaching became addictive and ultimately, rewarding.
Mya is studying Art, Music, Drama, and Education at the Tisch School of Arts.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Mya thought she would have to change her career. Instead, she was inspired to continue after meeting the broadway cast of The Lion King and hearing their stories of struggle. Mya believes the feeling of doing what you love is the feeling you must chase forever.
Isabella is studying Computer Programming at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Isabella wanted to join the robotics team in middle and high school, but family obligations stood in her way. Even if it was inaccessible, people were willing to listen. Isabella wrote emails, earned sponsorships, and worked diligently to create a chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at her school.
Samantha is studying Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia.
Samantha learned that in structural engineering, only 2.9% of professionals identify as female. Samantha’s experiences have prepared her to overcome the obstacles in engineering due to a lack of female representation. She has learned the best way to overcome misogyny in a male-dominated field is by empowering other women and will continue to promote inclusivity and respect throughout her career by mentoring and educating others.
Sifallah is studying Biology at the University of Texas at Austin.
As an American-Muslim who emigrated from Algeria with his family, Sifallah expected xenophobic attitudes. But instead of crumbling under the negativity, Sifallah banded together with other prejudiced victims and demanded action. This has ultimately morphed him into the individual he is today.
Sabrina is studying Computer & Information Sciences at the University of Victoria.
As she continues pursuing her Doctoral degree in computer science, Sabrina is continuing to engage with her local community to demonstrate the importance of computer science skills to diverse individuals. To put these efforts into action, Sabrina has co-founded the local Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Student Chapter.

Shayna is studying Heath Care Prerequisites at McMaster University.
Through her mental health struggles, Shayna has ignited a newfound empathy and compassion within herself. She learned just how important mental health is and has been inspired to explore this area in greater depth as a physician. Developing a patient perspective on mental health has informed her on the complex nature of mental illness, which will elevate her capacity to provide care when treating patients with mental health issues.

Jordan discovered that his upbringing influenced his leadership and educational success, with aspirations of advocating for others and contributing to society. Jordan's long-term goal as a Highway Engineer is to have a societal impact by building safer and more efficient highways.
