Adriana and her friends created Settlegration, an app assisting newcomers with language tutoring and babysitting services. Inspired by her parents' challenges as refugees, it gained international recognition as a top 10% semi-finalist in the Technovation Competition. Adriana is interning this summer with the Waterloo Transportation team.
Amna is studying Cell and Molecular Biology at Vanderbilt University.
Amna was bullied in school for having a unique accent. As she became more exposed to the field science field through internships, it was apparent across both fields that diversity existed and people come from across the world to create one community that worked for the same goals. Here, Amna realized that, far more than pronunciation, talent and ability are considered more valuable.
Alyssa is studying Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at University of California-Berkeley.
Alyssa joined the organizing team for PixelHacks, an all-female identifying high-school hackathon where she helped host events for women to attend workshops, hear from industry speakers, and create tech projects to help their communities. In college, Alyssa joined UC Berkeley’s Association of Women in Engineering, and now serves as an officer for the association.
Aryan is studying Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin.
Throughout his life, Aryan has celebrated diversity through different volunteering and service opportunities. A favorite is volunteering at the Feed My Starving Children packing center with his peers and family, as they pack hundreds of meals that are donated and distributed to developing countries.

Akilan has been volunteering with the Sierra Club, a grassroots nonprofit organization committed to protecting the environment, communities, and future, for the past 5 years as the Head of Food and Agriculture engagement team. This team focuses on expanding sustainable agriculture and disseminating information to promote sustainability with a specific focus on the planet's agriculture.

Ammielle is currently interning with the Montreal, Quebec Transportation team. Ammielle and her friends launched a GirlsWhoCode chapter and participated in the 2021 Technovation Canada Challenge. At 16, Anna stood in front of City Council and secured a grant for Project Dot. This moment of realization has solidified her dream of becoming a medical professional.

Since entering university, Alejandro has worked hard in his academic, personal, and community service development. His academic faculty awards have boosted his visibility and confidence, demonstrating that we all contribute value regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Eve cares about the future of other young, Indigenous women. She wants to make sure they see people who look like them in high-up positions and acting as a role model. Eve speaks to marginalized young women at their high schools about paths towards education and has been tutoring math to a young Metis person since 2020 to help graduate on time.

Christine is interning this spring with the Toronto, Ontario BC Hydro team. Christine was a judge for Ellehacks, a Podcast Editor for Lassone Engineering Society, a volunteer for Geering up UBC Engineering and Science for Kids where she taught core engineering and science while promoting STEM to youth and organized the Terry Fox Run while actively supporting cancer research.

Ashton is a member of the headspace Nowra Youth Reference Group which is a government funded mental health service aimed at 12–24-year-olds and provides peer workers, counsellors, psychologists, general practitioners, psychiatrists, and more. Ashton gives input on local events, funding, initiatives, prospective headspace employees, and more.
Derrick is studying Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech.
In high school, Derrick founded the Junior Model United Nations (MUN) Taipei in rural Taiwanese elementary and middle schools to mitigate the resource gap within the education system. The intention was to expose students to earlier to global awareness, analysis, and public speaking. Derrick produced content which was shown in 10 schools in four countries.

Maddie plans to study Microbiology and Immunology where she wants to discover ways to cure autoimmune diseases. She knows that if she ever runs into an obstacle, Maddie will never quit or let anything prevent her from achieving her goals.
Paula is studying Civil Engineering at Texas A&M.
Paula is interning this summer with the Texas Water team. As a Hispanic female in Engineering, Paula has faced negative stereotypes for the way she looks and thinks. These barriers have given her a chance to grow in ways that others haven’t. Paula’s unique experiences, because of her diversity, make her an extremely hard worker.

Luis, interning this summer with the Pasadena, California Water team, overcame the need to compare himself academically to his peers in his sophomore year of high school. He now focuses on self-improvement and has learned he can only encourage himself to grow for the better and do better than he did the day before.

Ryan always tackled his struggles without assistance but learned the value in asking questions. Ryan’s motivation took a steep upswing when he started to approach his lab sessions with determination as opposed to being prematurely defeated. Ryan now has a protocol to deal with challenges in his life by facing them with resilience, courage, and vulnerability.
Raiyana is studying Chemical Engineering at Laurentian University.
Moving to Canada as a young immigrant was an intimidating experience for Raiyana. However, when she encountered a woman of color who was an immigrant herself, her life changed. She was the role model Raiyana needed and seeing her excel in academia, despite sharing similar challenges and backgrounds, lit a fire of determination within herself.
Quinn is studying Psychology at the University of Wollongong.
Quinn nearly did not apply to university because he was certain he would not get in and was also anxious about failure. On the last day of applications, Quinn applied with a nothing to lose attitude. Fortunately, Quinn was accepted and able to be the first from his immediate family to enter university.
Michael is studying Neuroscience at Maryville College.
Michael created TutorPro, which is a club aimed at providing education opportunities for the less fortunate in his community. Michael also volunteered with the Morant Bay Infirmary based in St. Thomas, Jamaica during high school where he updated phone records, conducted logistic assessments of inventory, and interacted with patients who stem from diverse socioeconomic and neurodivergent backgrounds.
Samreen is studying Environmental Sciences at Yukon University.

Samantha’s inspiration in the STEM field came from her love of coding. As the only black girl in her computer science class, Samantha felt isolated and inadequate but eventually realized she belonged in every classroom she was in. Samantha also taught her little sister and ten of her friends how to code to make coding more accessible to girls of color.
Scholarship recipients of 2024
Our goal with the Equity and Diversity Scholarship is to show we believe in STEAM programs and want to encourage more students that their aspirations are achievable—we want the next generation to have the opportunity to pursue their higher education goals. The 2024 Scholarship saw 46 students from Australia, Canada, India, Peru, United States, and New Zealand receive funding for their continued education. Along with the Scholarship, we have seven paid internships within our Transportation, Buildings, Environmental Services, and Water teams in North America.
The students are passionate about their studies and future careers which are in a wide range of disciplines including computer programming, Indigenous studies, psychology, engineering, neuroscience, economics, mechatronics, biology, animal sciences, and more. We recognize the value and advantages of diverse ideas within our communities and are committed to providing a platform to support the next generation of leaders and champions in our industry.

Sports and fitness have taught Erin how to achieve long-term goals. Entering high school, Wrin was shy. 218 hours of training later, she was captain of the varsity softball team and achieved the Senior Female Athlete of the Year award in grade 11. This year, she has been chosen as a co-captain for the varsity field hockey team.

Jordan is passionate about making a difference in society by following a career as research-clinician. Currently, he is contributing to brain cancer research where he contributes to something bigger than himself while making a meaningful impact on society. Jordan hopes to continue this and other passions of his that include equity and access to global healthcare.

At his school's engineering club, Lofty-John built projects from scrap materials that promoted sustainability and encouraged STEM education: a Bluetooth speaker repurposed e-waste to address waste management and raise funds for local teachers and a homemade electricity-free game provided disadvantaged children with the joys of science from which he had benefited.

She was selected to become International Student Ambassador program for 2022, an organization that provides events and guidance to students seeking better opportunities. This past summer, Kathrine conducted undergraduate research experiments to detect muscle contractions which were used to control exoskeletal braces for knee reinforcement. The ultimate hope is that sensor usage can be combined in a way to utilize the muscle contractions to naturally move artificial limbs, or prosthesis.

Nathanael believes he is incredibly lucky to have been able to overcome life obstacles and to know with discipline the sustainability of education. After having experienced many sacrifices to get where he is, Nathanael had questioned his place in this new environment 15,000 km from his family, but now he knows he deserves it and is exactly where he needs to be.

Since she was a kid, Sarah has always prioritized her education, as she has always dreamed of attending a top-notch school of engineering. Sarah knew post-secondary education, as an Indigenous woman, is something that is often overlooked and not valued as much as it should be. Putting in the work has clearly paid off!

Tia is getting her Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in Maori and Indigenous Studies and English at the University of Canterbury.
Attending university and majoring in Maori and Indigenous Studies has strengthened Tia’s cultural connection and sense of identity. Now, Tia hopes to one day work in a field that supports her people. Every day at university, Tia learns something new about her culture and, in turn, something new about herself.

As an aspiring healthcare professional, being an ally for marginalized communities and an advocate for equity is important to Shayna. She hopes to conduct research on how to improve health outcomes for marginalized groups and aspires to restore trust in the healthcare system by ensuring every patient of Shayna’s feels valued and respected.

After helping the people of Chennai, India when flooding disaster struck, Shri learned the lesson her father was trying to teach her—to care more about other people than her own comfort. Since she was a kid, Sarah has always prioritized her education, as she has always dreamed of attending a top-notch school of engineering. Sarah knew post-secondary education, as an Indigenous woman, is something that is often overlooked and not valued as much as it should be. Putting in the work has clearly paid off!
Katrina is studying Journalism at Harvard.
Jordan's initial educational aspiration was to complete high school and be able to find employment. With his knowledge and resiliency, he is now passionate about changing the world and pursuing a career in medicine. He intends to work for Doctors Without Borders so that he may assist as many people as possible.

At his school's engineering club, Lofty-John built projects from scrap materials that promoted sustainability and encouraged STEM education: a Bluetooth speaker repurposed e-waste to address waste management and raise funds for local teachers and a homemade electricity-free game provided disadvantaged children with the joys of science from which he had benefited.

Kathrine knows that problem solving skills are necessary during the design and implantation of a project, and the complexity of those problems fascinates her. Kathrine seeks opportunities that serve her community: planting an orchard for the local Food Cupboard, repurposed construction materials into a garden, and led a team to custom build table and chairs for a local clubhouses.

Sports and fitness have taught Erin how to achieve long-term goals. Entering high school, Wrin was shy. 218 hours of training later, she was captain of the varsity softball team and achieved the Senior Female Athlete of the Year award in grade 11. This year, she has been chosen as a co-captain for the varsity field hockey team.

After helping the people of Chennai, India when flooding disaster struck, Shri learned the lesson her father was trying to teach her—to care more about other people than her own comfort. After graduation, Shri plans to use technology to enhance the lives of ordinary citizens in developing countries like India.

Beyond Bibek’s dedication to ensuring educational access, he is driven by a vision to establish technological community hubs, introduce rural empowerment Edutech initiatives, initiate green- tech projects, and organize various coding engagements. Dolev volunteered as a leader at a local youth center, was a member of the Cornwall Youth for Climate Action Committee where they meet once a month to discuss existing climate related municipal programs, suggest new ones, and work towards making the city more sustainable and greener, and volunteered at Cornwall’s National Orange Shirt Day in 2022 and 2023.

Paula is interning this summer with the Texas Water team. As a Hispanic female in Engineering, Paula has faced negative stereotypes for the way she looks and thinks. These barriers have given her a chance to grow in ways that others haven’t. Paula’s unique experiences, because of her diversity, make her an extremely hard worker.
Raiyana is studying Chemical Engineering at Laurentian University.
Moving to Canada as a young immigrant was an intimidating experience for Raiyana. However, when she encountered a woman of color who was an immigrant herself, her life changed. She was the role model Raiyana needed and seeing her excel in academia, despite sharing similar challenges and backgrounds, lit a fire of determination within herself.
Quinn is studying Psychology at the University of Wollongong.
Quinn nearly did not apply to university because he was certain he would not get in and was also anxious about failure. On the last day of applications, Quinn applied with a nothing to lose attitude. Fortunately, Quinn was accepted and able to be the first from his immediate family to enter university.

Ryan is studying to become a Biotech Lab Specialist at the University of British Columbia.
Ryan always tackled his struggles without assistance but learned the value in asking questions. Ryan’s motivation took a steep upswing when he started to approach his lab sessions with determination as opposed to being prematurely defeated. Ryan now has a protocol to deal with challenges in his life by facing them with resilience, courage, and vulnerability.
Samantha is studying Economics at Harvard.
Samantha’s inspiration in the STEM field came from her love of coding. As the only black girl in her computer science class, Samantha felt isolated and inadequate but eventually realized she belonged in every classroom she was in. Samantha also taught her little sister and ten of her friends how to code to make coding more accessible to girls of color.

She hopes to conduct research on how to improve health outcomes for marginalized groups and aspires to restore trust in the healthcare system by ensuring every patient of Shayna’s feels valued and respected.
