The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can help you

The United Nations SDGs are a suite of 17 goals that aim to solve the most urgent needs facing communities around the world, by 2030. They provide a common platform of metrics for businesses from all sectors and governments of all sizes to work towards in pursuit of sustainable development.

Stantec's SDG Focus

Our project work touches most of the 17 SDGs, but to be most successful in advancing progress, we focus on the eight where we have the most direct influence and significant impact.

No matter where you are on the journey towards an equitable and sustainable future, ask the following questions to explore how the SDGs can be part of your roadmap. And how Stantec can help.

What are the biggest vulnerabilities of your water, stormwater, and/or wastewater infrastructure to current and future climate change impacts?

For businesses and communities around the world, a reliable source of water is critical to everything from supply chains to food security, but these are increasingly under threat. SDG #6 sets targets for achieving equitable access to water and sanitation for all, protecting water ecosystems from pollution, and increasing water-use efficiency and integrated water resources management.

What does the roadmap to net zero carbon look like for your assets and communities?

Carbon-related regulations and public scrutiny of fossil fuel use are increasing, and conventional energy sources are experiencing increased supply disruptions and costs. The topics and targets of SDG #7 describe how to be successful in the energy transition – from innovative clean energy technologies to funding clean energy R&D.

How could your project be designed to strengthen the sustainability of the community it serves through increasing energy efficiency, reducing water use, and ensuring resiliency?

By making us rethink the infrastructure underpinning how we live, work, and fundamentally communicate with each other, the 4th industrial revolution is an opportunity to rewrite sustainable development. From carbon neutral manufacturing to climate resilient infrastructure enabling every person access to job opportunities, to Smart Cities and communities, SDG #9 describes the immense potential for industry and infrastructure to reach even the most ambitious goals.

Will your project improve equitable access to green space, recreation amenities, schooling, and job opportunities within a reasonable walking distance and/or via accessible, reliable public transit?

The pandemic, economic downturn and climate crisis have highlighted both the current inequalities and the opportunities within cities for improving the quality of life for people across all demographics. SDG #11 provides a lens to make sure these decisions result in development that will be sustainable in a future of increasing challenges.

Are you part of the circular economy? What would a more sustainable management of resources and waste look like along your supply chain?

As consumers and producers, we need to better understand the impact of making, using, and disposing of resources. And we must consider the information available to consumers to help them make more sustainable choices. Embracing the concepts of circular economy, reducing food waste, and minimizing human health and environmental impacts, the targets in SDG #12 support economic growth through sustainable practices.

What is the role of this project in helping your company meet sustainability commitments and comply with regulations?

Companies and countries alike face physical risks, transitional risks, but also abundant business opportunities for those who take meaningful action to avoid greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the climate resiliency of their supply chain partners and communities. SDG #13 sets targets for education, policies and action that result in climate change mitigation, adaptation, and emergency preparedness.

How can this project protect marine resources adjacent and downstream while incorporating circular economy waste management principles?

Marine ecosystems around the world are threatened by pollution from waste – notably plastics, untreated wastewater, and other sources of toxic chemicals. All businesses and communities play a role in creating this pollution, even if indirectly, which means they can also use the targets found in SDG #14 to find an opportunity in circular economy innovations that avoid or reduce waste and pollution.

How can the scope and activities of this project be designed to protect all natural ecosystems on this site and beyond, preferably through nature-based solutions?

From forests and wetlands to agricultural fields and freshwater ecosystems, protecting these lands is fundamental to not just business continuity but human survival. And they are all under threat. SDG #15 can help you reduce the use of new raw materials, look for additionality opportunities, and understand how natural capital valuations show a clear business case for investing in the protection and restoration of our land.
