Every family knows how the car serves well beyond a mode of transportation. It can also act as a waiting room, a napping station, an entertainment hub, even a makeshift restaurant.
In fact, there are many ways to intentionally have fun as a family in the comfort of your own vehicle. Here are five suggestions for making memories in the car, even when you’re not going anywhere at all.
Get into your matching family pyjamas and head down to your local drive-in movie theatre. Fold down the back seats and pop open the rear hatch door. Fill up the back with fluffy pillows and blankets to make it comfy and roomy enough for the whole family. Then get your popcorn and candies, sit back and enjoy a favourite flick on the big screen. No drive-in nearby? Use a projector and your garage door as a pseudo-screen instead.

Turn your eyes to the sky and spend a night gazing at the moon, planets, stars and galaxies. If you’re in a light-polluted area, drive out of the city to find some truly dark night sky. Bring binoculars or a telescope if you have; if not, the naked eye works just fine. Download an app if you want to identify specific constellations or make up your own connect-the-star patterns. If you have younger kids, simply open up the moon roof so they can stay in their seats. Older kids can take turns lying on the hood or using camp chairs outside.
With the advent of the rooftop tent, camping has gone next-level. Now, you can literally raise the roof, setting up camp on the roof of your SUV. Kids liken it to a treehouse experience while parents can pretend they’re glamping with an actual mattress instead of sticks and dirt to sleep on. For bigger families, make room for more fun by outfitting the back of the vehicle with a couple of sleeping bags and pillows, too.

Most major airports and surrounding areas have parking areas dedicated to safely plane
spotting–the hobby of watching planes take off, fly overhead and land. To enjoy this exhilarating experience, you can lie on the hood of your vehicle, open up the back hatch or observe through the moon roof to see, hear and even feel the vibrations of these giant machines. It’s also fun to try and capture photos of the planes in action. It’s thrilling for plane-loving kids and adults alike.
Enjoy the excitement of plane spotting
There are few things as beautiful as a sunrise and sunset. Even though they happen every day, few of us take the time to really appreciate them. While sunrises are likely too tricky with kids, plan to take in a sunset during your road trips or even just as a fun weeknight event. Park at a great vantage point to watch the rays descend, and just soak it in. Make it more of an outing by packing along a picnic dinner to enjoy.
