Bruce and Jacqueline “Jacquie” Gribens, both JD ’91, met at the Red Hat, one of Boston’s oldest bars, at the end of their first week of classes at Suffolk Law. Jacquie was fluent in seven languages and had a business degree from UMass Amherst—she intended to be an international corporate lawyer. Bruce hoped to work for a nonprofit in special education.
Like many law students, their intent and what they ultimately pursued are two different things. Jacquie joined the SuClinica program, working with Greater Boston Legal Service, while Bruce moved into tax law. Before she unexpectedly passed in 2019, Jacquie pursued legal work in housing, welfare, immigration, and domestic violence. She and Bruce also tied the knot, and the pair adopted three children; all the while Jacquie continued serving those less fortunate in her community.“
I set up the Jacqueline A. Gribens ’91 Memorial Scholarship Fund to continue supporting her passion. The Scholarship Fund, with the help of my classmates, will provide a stipend for a Suffolk Law School student who is working in the Immigration Clinic to soften their financial burden so that they may be able to accept a job with Legal Services or another nonprofit helping immigrants.”
