A group of 36 graduating Suffolk University student veterans, many of them from the Law School, received a salute from Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“Since I’ve taken off my uniform, I’ve seen how the service and impact of veterans can go far beyond their time standing watch on active duty,” Dunford said at a ceremony last spring, urging the students to assume leadership roles in their communities as civilians. “Democracy is not a spectator sport. There are lots of ways to serve, and if we want our communities in this experiment we call democracy to succeed, we actually need to step up and do something about it.”
A Massachusetts native, Dunford served as the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military advisor to the president, secretary of defense, and National Security Council from 2015 to 2019. The ceremony honored veterans and active duty members of the military who completed their education at Suffolk while serving their country. Dunford attended at the invitation of Robert C. Lamb, Jr., chair of the Suffolk University Board of Trustees.
