The Class of 1972 has raised the bar for Suffolk Law alumni, generating a record-setting $580,000 in honor of its 50th class reunion. Friendly competition fueled Planning Committee members: They asked their fellow alumni to surpass the efforts of the Class of 1969, which set the previous record of $465,000 in 2019.
In encouraging her peers to give, committee member Christine Newman Garvey, JD ’72, says that Suffolk Law’s No. 1 ranking in legal technology was a helpful fact to share with alumni. “This wasn’t an old, traditional area, like property rights or wills and trusts,” says Garvey, a University Trustee. “It was fun to be able to say that in this new area of the law, Suffolk had done really well—and people were impressed.”
Committee members also mentioned Suffolk Law’s strong reputation in the judiciary, she says. Two Class of 1972 committee members had served on the bench, and significant percentages of judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island (27% and 40%, respectively) are Suffolk Law graduates.“
The Class of 1972’s record-setting contributions are a remarkable testament to our alumni’s belief in the continuing power of a Suffolk Law degree,” says Law School Dean Andrew Perlman. “It is inspiring to witness the impact that the Law School has had on so many lives and the class’s willingness to pay it forward to the next generation of Suffolk Law students.”
Members of the nine-person committee are: Former Associate Dean John C. Deliso; Christine Newman Garvey; Hon. Spencer M. Kagan; Howard M. Kahalas; Leonard M. Krulewich; Joseph A. Lamagna; Warren G. Levenbaum; Hon. Bonnie H. MacLeod; and Hon. Edward H. Newman.
