Suffolk Law students in the Transactional Clinic built the complex legal scaffolding for the first worker-owned and managed childcare cooperative in Massachusetts, the Resplandor Co-Op of East Boston. The worker-owners, a group of immigrant women (pictured with Velinda Bolduc, JD/MBA ’23, front) worked with Suffolk Law’s clinic to set up a cooperative LLC in which they collectively make decisions on all matters, including fee structures, worker incentives, insurance coverage, and hiring and firing practices. It’s a unique arrangement, distinct from both parent-owned co-ops and privately owned childcare facilities, where workers do not have decision-making authority.
