This summer, Suffolk University’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) launched its first Alternative Summer Break in Ghana. Over nine days, undergraduate and graduate students explored education, innovation, sustainability, and Pan-Africanism in Kumasi, Cape Coast, and the capital city of Accra, where they visited Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (above), which honors the legacy of the first president of Ghana, who led the country to independence in 1957. In partnership with Suffolk’s Black Studies Program, the Law School’s IP & Entrepreneurship Clinic, and Culture Beyond Borders, they built furniture at Tetrefu Technical School, engaged in academic exchanges, and met with entrepreneurs and community leaders in film, technology, and sustainable design. “The experience deepened cultural understanding and advanced our mission of reflection, service, and global connection,” says CCE Director Dr. Trina Bryant.
