Alumni News
In April 1950, the Varsity Club and the Suffolk Journal ran a contest to determine a new nickname for the University’s athletic teams, previously known as the Royals or the Judges. The winning nickname—the Suffolk Rams.
To celebrate the change, the University acquired a four-legged mascot, “Hiram the Ram,” named after Suffolk founder Gleason Archer’s brother, Hiram Archer, a much-beloved Law School faculty member and trustee. Over the years the Rams’ athletic successes have done much to earn respect for Suffolk University and built pride among students and alumni. Today, Suffolk has 20 different NCAA Division III athletic teams and 350 student-athletes who proudly call themselves Rams. (And Rammy, Suffolk’s two-legged, 7-foot-tall mascot, proudly follows in Hiram’s footsteps.) —Michael Dello Iacono, University Records Manager
