welcome
As we navigate the return to “normal” we consider amenities, perks, floorplan configurations, etc. But often overlooked in this narrative is the ubiquitous chair—which tells us everything we need to know about the many ways we work. This year in Chicago we’ll explore the next phases of office life - from softening systems to collaboration fatigue, to how the chair has been a consummate sign of both disruption and innovation.

Design for an Emerging Office
Much has been written about the changing nature of the office, from its location to its form and function. Often overlooked in this narrative is the ubiquitous chair—which tells us everything we need to know about the many ways we work. As office work evolved towards hours in front of a screen, so too, the chair evolved from a simple seat to a highly engineered ergonomic machine. Equally, as collaboration increased, the chair softened to accommodate a more relaxed work culture. Lounge seating and residential influences appeared in nearly every office. From today’s perspective, the chair has been a consummate sign of both disruption and innovation. Given more diverse, digital, and dynamic workers, the office experience is no longer about a chair and a desk. We may sit in 4-8 different chairs over the course of a day. As we move from focused work to social interactions and team meetings (and back again), a spectrum of chairs supports each of our activities. The choice of chair signals the user’s intention and the purpose of the space.
Collaboration Refuge
Remember Zoom Fatigue? We can also get Collaboration Fatigue. While Collaboration may be the benefit of coming back to the office, it can also take a toll on a worker who has settled into a quiet rhythm at home and has a hard time adjusting to the activity, volume and pace of an active collaborative space. As you travel through the showroom you’ll see areas of various refuges from collaboration – high backed chairs, configurations facing windows that only accommodate one or two people. Employee wellness means more than step challenges, it’s also about our mental and emotional health, and providing areas to recharge is a crucial aspect in future office planning.
Softening Systems
Throughout the showroom you’re going to see a trend of softer touches on everything – including systems. It’s a merging of the needs of a high-performance workstation with the feel of a welcoming and inviting space, with additional acoustical and privacy considerations. You’ll see a range in levels of privacy and softness – from our new Hoodie screen, to curved felt panels along the edges of desks.
Innovations in seating reflect new concerns as we return to the office to build bonds and to engage in the fluid interactions that spark creativity. There is a growing awareness that the open, collaborative workspace has had unintended consequences—which demand more attention than ever. The distracting hum of office activity creates conditions that make jumping back into the flow of the workplace more challenging than anticipated. Sometimes we need a space to take a minute. Thoughtful use of furniture can create spaces that offer a degree of privacy conducive to personal performance and well-being. Such “collaboration refuge” zones lie at various points along a spectrum bracketed by the open plan and the private office; allowing for varied levels of engagement and privacy. Just as diverse workstyles and work postures require seating that provides different levels of support, the “posture” of refuge varies depending on how much or how little you need. Will a high-backed chair paired with a screen be enough? Do you need a space for a longer touch-down, giving you access to power and laptop tables? Are you looking for acoustic or visual privacy or both? Employing the entire scale – from simple Fractal seating to a fully enclosed Phone Booth – will provide sufficient options to recharge and re-engage as needed. The right chair and the proper amount of privacy allow employees to fully benefit from a return to the office.

2023 AWARDS
Luum Super Natural Collection took home a MetropolisLikes Award in the category, Leaving Less to the Landfills. For many manufacturers, reuse of some material is now standard. This year’s updates not only increase the percentage of recycled content, but accelerate efforts to make more items recyclable to close the loop.
Teknion unTethered won a MetropolisLikes Award in the category, Staying in Charge. As users are more connected and more mobile, manufacturers are making sure more power follows them, in-hand or integrated directly into furniture.
