No other annual sporting event garners quite so much attention and fanfare as the Super Bowl. The annual league championship game from the National Football League (NFL) dates back to 1966 and has grown in popularity and status each year since.
The contest captivates viewers from across the States and beyond. It attracts world-class musicians from Rihanna to J.Lo for the iconic Halftime show and is a staple on the US cultural calendar like no other sporting event.
So brush up on the hometowns of the most recent winning teams from Kansas City to Seattle, and let this short guide help you plan your next US Super Bowl-inspired city break.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have seen their hometown transform in recent years. The first five-star hotel – the Tampa Edition – arrived in 2021 to great fanfare and more flights from the UK, and other hotel openings have planted this prime Florida destination firmly on the map for UK travellers. The beer scene here is inventive and makes use of the local natural bounty from citrus to Cuban coffee. The Buccaneers may have pledged allegiance to the locally brewed and owned Coppertail Brewing Co. but there are over 110 breweries to choose from in the Great Tampa Bay area, making it one of the top craft beer scenes in the country with the greatest concentration of breweries in the state of Florida. The city sports great beaches and museums to accompany the beer scene but look beyond the city limits for a wilderness teeming with manatees, mangroves and more.

'The jazz and barbecue scenes go hand in hand and never fail to entertain those who pass through these vibrant streets'
The New England Patriots operate out of the Gillette Stadium, located 22 miles out of the city of Boston, in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The 2020 winners provide yet another reason to come and get to know the Greater Boston Area and the great state beyond. Most explorations rightly begin in Boston where its rich academic legacy and setting as the birthplace of the American Revolution cements its place in history, while its inventive culinary scene keeps it looking to the future. Outside the city, the coastline enchants with its strong seafood culture: the Maine lobster industry dates back 400 years – it’s one of the oldest continually operated industries in North America – and each and every catch is still hand harvested. The unforgettable and distinctive sweet flesh is down to the colder Atlantic waters, and seafood shacks and fine-dining establishments along the region’s coastline showcase the catch in myriad ways. Summer is the best time to be on the coast and Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard steal the show year after year but when autumn falls head inland to Vermont to check out the kaleidoscopic show put on by the famous seasonal foliage displays.
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles to clinch the 2023 Super Bowl 38-35. This must-watch NFL team is making headlines for all the right reasons and their home city has plenty to shout about too. Beyond the Arrowhead Stadium – home of the Chiefs – the city and state of Missouri beyond has plenty to enchant visitors, new and returning. The jazz and barbecue scenes go hand in hand and never fail to entertain those who pass through these vibrant streets. The Green Lady Lounge is an iconic jazz club where you’ll find the city’s jazz musicians, open 365 days a year, bringing sweet Kansas City Jazz to an intimate crowd while the Blue Room in the Jazz Museum delivers a dose of history alongside the live shows. The barbecue scene here with its sweet thick sauce – made up of tomatoes and molasses – that blankets the meat is truly unforgettable. Try out the renowned ribs at Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue restaurant and the classics at Jack Stack, which sports 11 hickory smoked meats. Beyond the city walls there’s a rich Native American history to discover right across the state.

The Colorado city of Denver has been home to the Broncos team and their homeground, the Empower Field at Mile High, since they began. Situated in the South Platte River Valley, Denver’s urban hub is a warren of arts and culture blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year. The dining scene has been making waves in recent years as chef-led restaurants gain popularity and status across the neighbourhoods. The food hall revolution has taken off and whether you’re checking out The Source, an artisan market in a former iron foundry, or the Denver Milk Market where acclaimed chef Frank Bonanno runs a spot rotating 16 culinary concepts, there’s so much to entertain the hungry adventurer. This is a city of intrepid spirit in many ways and the locals are always looking for a way to get outdoors and exploring. Out to the west of the city the Red Rocks Park is a natural playground of red stone in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Explore on the hiking or cycling tracks or check out listings for a performance in the iconic amphitheatre framed by those red rocks.
The Seahawks – the 2014 winners – know how to put on a good show for visitors to their city of Seattle. The Lumen Field stadium in the SoDo neighbourhood is a central Seattle icon for football fixtures and music performances. The iconic Space Needle punctuates the mountain-backed skyline of the Pacific Northwest city but at ground level it's the coffee scene that really stands out. It’s known as the coffee capital of the USA for good reason: people here consume more coffee than in any other region and there are coffee counters on every corner, from the original Starbucks to the countless grassroots creations that have paved the way for the scene since. The streets and the urban centre of Washington State’s biggest city are captivating but this is a city surrounded by mountains, water and forests so its prime adventure territory too. Kayak on Lake Union or Elliott’s Bay, hike the trails at Seward Park or look out for black bears in the wildlife-rich Mount Rainier National Park to the south of the city.

The 2018 Super Bowl winners, the Philadelphia Eagles are proud to call the Pennsylvanian city home. The Lincoln Financial Field – The Linc – sits in the South Philadelphia East neighbourhood, where you’ll find the champion team training and drilling with the city’s skyline as a backdrop. Beyond this little corner with a big sporting legacy, the city teems with iconic symbolism. From the Liberty Bell, which has marked many of the significant moments of independence in the history of the US, to the steps that Rocky ran up in the eponymous film, the city is full of all kinds of American history. But today it’s the green spaces (Philly is home to North America’s largest urban green space at 9,200 acres), iconic dishes like the Philly Cheesesteak and its UNESCO listing as the only World Heritage City in the US that makes its mark.

The buzzing, bohemian beach town of Venice is the place to be for ocean lovers and urban explorers
Nothing says “welcome to LA” quite like catching a glimpse of the Hollywood Hills sign
The Los Angeles Rams are proud to call the great coastal city of California home. This is a place of epic cinematic legend, played out on the natural landscapes and in the neighbourhoods, too. The Hollywood sign dominates the skyline and makes no quiet announcement of its status as a verified destination for lovers of the silver screen. Its neighbourhoods are just as iconic too. The Venice Beach neighbourhood is a true LA hotspot: from the Venice Boardwalk to the Abbot Kinney Boulevard, these streets are brimming with life, excellent restaurants and laidback cafes. The streets play host to the Hollywood Walk of Fame too, where visitors can see the stars of the screen immortalised on the sidewalks. It’s impossible to step too far without being reminded of the great legacy and creativity of this city. Venture out of the main hub and to South Los Angeles to check out the impressive SoFi stadium – the home of the Rams – or out to the rugged outskirts to the west where hikers flock to the hills and the Getty View trail and Getty Art Museum.
