The last decade brought technological trends and changes that profoundly affected us in positive and negative ways. We saw the rise of the gig economy, facial recognition, smart home devices, cryptocurrency and social media’s disruptive role in elections, just to name a few.
Tech trends for 2020 and beyond open new career paths

“Since more legacy software systems need to be secure, we will see more demand in making software systems secure.”
For centuries, technology has been influencing the way people engage with the world and shape the course of history. In 17th- and 18th-century France, large-scale 3D maps — painstakingly built by hand down to the most intricate details — were the most advanced mapping technology of their time. They were such valuable strategic tools that leaders like Napoleon and King Louis XIV considered them military secrets and hid them from public view.

Cybersecurity will continue to be one of the most critical areas of technology in 2020 and beyond.
“The cloud is everywhere,” says Professor Sam Chung, dean of the School of Technology and Computing at City University of Seattle.
The museum is partnering with Microsoft to present “The Mont Saint-Michel: Digital perspectives on the model,” a Microsoft HoloLens 2 mixed reality experience that melds cutting-edge technology of the 17th century with cutting-edge technology of today that’s poised to open up our perspective on the future and blends the digital world with the physical world.
The Musee des Plans-Reliefs in Paris is home to more than 100 of these historic relief maps that have withstood the test of time. But the crown jewel of the collection is the model of Mont-Saint-Michel—a rocky headland off the Normandy coast with a Benedictine abbey that’s an architectural marvel in its own right — presented by a monk to Louis XIV in 1701. Microsoft AI along with a new HoloLens 2 experience are bringing these technological feats, both the relief map and Mont-Saint-Michel itself, to life for a new generation.
The model of Mont-Saint-Michel will be on display at MOHAI starting Nov. 23 through Jan. 26. Adding to the physical model will be an immersive mixed reality experience. Unlike many virtual reality viewers, which block out the world around the viewer, “With the HoloLens 2 you are aware of all your surroundings,” says Leonard Garfield, MOHAI executive director. “You’re in a room with other people, you’re enjoying the model, but it just adds that extra dimension of information and perspective.”
City University of Seattle is a private nonprofit university accredited through the doctoral level. It is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the Top 50 in the country for its online bachelor’s degree programs for seven consecutive years.

So now that we’re moving from the 2010s into the 2020s, it’s a good opportunity to look forward and understand what the next year will most likely bring for technology. This is an especially important step for students considering careers in tech, or business and tech professionals wanting to brush up or learn new skills. After all, these burgeoning new fields will surely be tomorrow’s career hotspots.
Professor Sam Chung, dean of the School of Technology and Computing at City University of Seattle, says he thinks there are several major tech trends to keep an eye on in 2020. Those trends include cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cloud computing and full stack web development. Let’s take a closer look at each of these topics.
Of course, cybersecurity continues to be one of the most important spaces in technology for the near term, perhaps the most important, as the continued occurrences of massive data breaches at banks, credit reporting agencies, health care systems, retailers and others routinely demonstrate. Add in the new threats of election interference and things like deepfake videos (manipulated videos or images that make it look as if a person is saying or doing something they didn’t actually do), and 2020 is bound to be a bumpy year.
“We have improved security in systems, networks and data,” says Chung. “However, we need to pay attention to software security, which is relatively not solid in application development. Since more legacy software systems need to be secure, we will see more demand in making software systems secure.”
years now, with practical applications in a wide range of disciplines like smartphone voice-controlled assistants, driverless cars and virtual healthcare appointments. AI has also emerged as an especially promising player in the cybersecurity space. The thinking goes that the more intelligent and self-directed computers become, the more adept at fending off malware attacks they can be.

Deepfake videos use machine learning technology to create new imagery of a person doing or saying something that didn’t actually happen.
“Security breaches in companies are the norm today,” says Clark Ngo, a graduate student in the computer science department at City University of Seattle. “Personal information is stolen left and right. AI will be an important technology to combat cyberattacks.”
The rise of
This has huge implications for things like cryptography and national security. While it would take a hacker using a classic computer decades to break much of the encryption standards we use today, it’s assumed that a quantum computer could break that same encryption in days or even hours. Needless to say, new forms of quantum-proof encryption will need to be developed quickly.
Full-stack web development describes a holistic approach to development that includes both front-end systems (client-facing software, for example) and back-end ones (server-facing). “Web applications are looking for ‘mobile first’ and ‘offline first,’” says Chung. “Web applications will be close to mobile apps. Also, web applications will work in online and offline modes. These applications will use advanced full-stack technologies.”
To prepare for roles in these growing new tech sectors, today’s students have ample opportunity for hands-on, real-world study.
“In the School of Technology and Computing at City University of Seattle, students can earn their skills based on three different levels — tools, platforms and languages,” says Professor Sam Chung.
And according to Chung, full-stack development has implications for
Over the last few years, we’ve seen cloud computing balloon into a multi-billion dollar industry, largely driven by Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. “Cloud computing, also called serverless computing, means that businesses don’t have to provision and manage those computers,” says Ngo. “This allows you to focus on developing your business logic instead of worrying about maintaining the infrastructure.”

Through virtual labs, the students understand cybersecurity and practice cyber defense and operations. To learn data science, AI and machine learning, they study statistical computing with diverse languages and packages supporting AI and machine learning.”

challenges in the field of cybersecurity. Whereas a classical computer processes bits of information through a binary process (where a bit is either 1 or 0), a quantum computer draws on quantum mechanics to process qubits of information in a simultaneous process (1 and 0 at the same time). This means that quantum computers, which are still in the relatively early stages of development, are exponentially faster than classical computers.
