Look out for sites posing as different news orgs. And be wary of domain extensions that are designed to appear legit, but might not be.
Check the source. If you don’t recognize it, click to other pages, check its mission, and research if other trustworthy sources have pointed to it.
Words like “opinion,” “perspective,” and “editorial” often clarify that a piece is not neutral.
Read beyond the headline. Headlines may be reductive, purposely manipulative to attract clicks or satire.
Search the author to make sure they’re credible. And, ya know, a real person.
Outdated info can be misleading. Make sure parts have been updated or a story is ‘back’ in the news if it’s being promoted.
Check where the article links to. Credible stories back up their claims with facts and other reputable reporting on the same topic.
Turn to the pros if you need. Like a topic expert, fact-checking org or dependable news team focused on debunking misinfo.
