rom warming, round-the-fire-pit flavours of an American single malt to the vanilla lightness of a bourbon, American whiskey comes in as many guises as there
are personal drinking preferences. If you grew up in the UK, chances are high that you’re better acquainted with the whisk(e)ys made in Scotland and Ireland. But embark on your own American Whiskey Cocktails Journey this summer and you’ll discover a chameleonic drink resting nicely between the contemporary and the classic.
The American Whiskey Cocktails Journey takes place in London from July 1-15. Bars across the capital will serve their take on an American whiskey cocktail – but with some inventive twists. See how the capital’s mixologists make use of different American whiskeys, from the mellow tones of a charcoal-filtered Tennessee whiskey to the piquant high notes of an American rye whiskey – and of course American single malt whiskey and the ever-popular bourbon. Take your time and visit a variety of bars across the fortnight, and you’ll notice one common factor: the combining of all-American flavours and concepts with something a little more quintessentially London. (Jellied eel Manhattan, anyone?!)

Where can I find an American whiskey cocktail?
Simply put, American whiskey is a sophisticated drink. Here, we move away from a quick-and-dirty lager on a hot afternoon and into something that demands a higher level of respect. This versatile tipple shares a few things in common with its Scottish and Irish counterparts while also maintaining a number of distinct qualities. Forget the blackened peaty notes of some Scotches and instead seek out flavours with the clarity of a running stream. From brown-sugar sweetness to strident palate-cleansing orange, there’s much to be discovered, which is what makes American whiskeys the ideal base for a whole range of cocktails.
What is American whiskey?
Three facts to impress your friends with
American whiskeys tend to need less time to mature than Scotches and Irish whiskies thanks to the hotter summers and cooler winters in the US. In addition, American whiskeys are aged in new charred oak barrels, as opposed to used barrels which Scotch and Irish whiskies are typically aged in. When it comes to American single malt whiskey (‘single malt’ means that it has been distilled entirely at one distillery), the seasonal fluctuations of the American climate speed up the interaction between the spirit and the new charred oak barrel, which means that they get their ‘age’ quicker.
It’s younger than its Scottish and Irish cousins

Tennessee whiskey is one of two American whiskeys recognised by 44 countries, including in the UK, as a ‘distinctive product’ of the USA (the other is bourbon). To be a Tennessee whiskey it must be filtered through sugar maple charcoal in something known as the ‘Lincoln County Process’. The precise way each distillery does this is part of the magic. Other varieties, such as American rye whiskey and bourbon, can be made anywhere in the United States. American rye whiskey – which has made a major resurgence over the past decade – is perfect if you’re looking for something with a spicier profile.
It (sometimes) involves the Lincoln County Process
If you’ve heard of one American whiskey, it is probably bourbon. But thinking all American whiskeys are bourbons is an amateur mistake, my friend. Bourbon is actually one of several American whiskeys, but it is a particularly special one. Appreciate its mahogany tones glistening in the light before letting that seductively smooth and slightly sweet taste roll over your tongue as the ice rumbles in the glass. What a way to watch the sun go down…
Bourbon is American whiskey but not all American whiskeys are bourbons
Cheers!
