Scotts Miracle-Gro, headquartered in Marysville, Ohio, is one of the world’s largest marketers of branded consumer products for lawn and garden care, including the market-leading Scotts®, Miracle-Gro® and Ortho® brands. The company’s wholly owned subsidiary,
The Hawthorne Gardening Company,
is also a leading provider of nutrients, lighting and other materials used in hydroponic growing.
Overview
To more efficiently and cost effectively haul products from its Ohio and Iowa manufacturing facilities to its Chicago distribution center, Scotts Miracle-Gro replaced the use of a contract carriers with company trucks. To efficiently leverage the new private fleet focused on delivering soil and mulch products to retailers, the company recognized the need to eliminate empty mileage by filling unused carrying capacity with external freight. Scotts Miracle-Gro also required freight carrying capacity to meet seasonal needs when production ramps up in late fall through spring.
SOLUTION
Collaboratively source capacity and
facilitate planned continuous moves
through Transplace Lanehub
With a new team in place to better integrate freight transportation across its operations, Scotts Miracle-Gro began using the Transplace Lanehub collaborative transportation network. The platform enables shippers to facilitate planned continuous moves by matching recurring freight lanes on a consistent basis to jointly source capacity or better utilize their private fleets. Backhaul Assist, the newest capability offered by Lanehub, allows shippers that have private fleets or utilize dedicated contract carriers to market their available or anticipated capacity to other shippers.
Today, Scotts Miracle-Gro is filling over 15% of its private fleet’s previously unused carrying capacity on empty lanes by finding partners on the Transplace Lanehub network. The Lanehub network is also being used to fill capacity during busy seasons by partnering with non-competing shippers to create win-win partnerships. For example, with a large amount of warehousing activity in Ohio, Scotts Miracle-Gro can use the network to find carriers coming into and out of the state with available capacity.
