Austin
Getaway Guide:
BACK TO
THE TOP
Tucked in the heart of the Lone Star State, Austin is a capital that once drew mostly government officials and Willie Nelson superfans. Today, it’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The result of this boom is a true melting pot, still firmly rooted in its Texan ways, all set against a backdrop of rolling hills.
Drive about three hours northwest of Houston to spend a long weekend here and you’ll see why. Drift between picnic-table barbecue joints, late-night saloons and the cool banks of the Colorado River. Discover what keeps Austin “weird,” and maybe even head home with a fresh piece of Western wear.
6th Street
Live music is at the heart of Austin, and there’s a scene for everyone—whether you’re ready to two-step or just tap your knee from a barstool. When the sun goes down, head to The White Horse, self-proclaimed “The Best Honky Tonk in East Austin.” For somewhere with a deeper history, Continental Club, a city landmark, is open seven nights a week. Their intimate stage hosts everything from country to swing to blues.
Don’t let Austin’s summer heat scare you off. Just pack a swimsuit. Fed by underground springs, Barton Springs Pool sits within Zilker Park and offers a refreshing escape even on the hottest of days. For a more active outing, rent a paddleboard or kayak on Lady Bird Lake. The popular reservoir is framed by downtown Austin’s skyline and offers some of the best views in the city.
Low and slow is the secret to Central Texas’s fall-off-the-bone meats, and in Austin, the competition is fierce. Start with a behind-the-scenes tour at Terry Black’s Barbecue, home to fourth-generation pitmasters. Brave the line at Franklin Barbecue for their famous brisket and all the classic sides. Or find out what the buzz is about at la Barbecue, a Michelin-starred, female-owned spot that’s earned its place among the best of the best.
