Countless outdoor adventures, some of the best stargazing on the East Coast, hundreds of waterfalls and impossibly bucolic mountain towns are all found in West Virginia, an unforgettable destination. Plus, you can belt out John Denver’s song as you drive along the country roads. Read our guide here.
West Virginia
Enjoy locally grown ingredients and an authentic culinary experience in each of North Carolina’s three regions: the mountains, the Piedmont and the coastline. Coastal seafood, farm-fresh produce, craft beers and wineries as well as multiple styles of barbecue await. Read about it here.
North Carolina
With 92 state parks totalling more than 607 square kilometres as well as hundreds of ponds and lakes scattered throughout its terrain, Missouri has a wealth of outdoor activities that appeal to every interest. Read more here, and then let the Show-Me State show you what it’s got.
Missouri

With more than six million hectares of forest, nearly six million hectares of farmland and 1,865 kilometres of navigable streams and rivers, Arkansas is known as “The Natural State” for good reason. Back in 1996, environmental enthusiasts here even voted for Amendment 75, a sales tax on themselves that provides millions of dollars in funds to preserve nature.

Dating back to 1500 BC, Poverty Point World Heritage Site contains some of the largest earthen mounds in North America. Archaeologists estimate that it took more than 1,000 Native Americans working full-time for up to 90 days to build these mounds, the largest of which is nearly 22 metres tall. Most interestingly, the imported raw materials found here suggest an extensive trade network with other parts of the South and Midwest.
Louisiana
There are 25 state parks around Mississippi and nearly all of them offer some sort of campsite, whether it’s an RV or tent campground or cabins/cottages. Depending on which one you choose, activities include fishing, boating, pools, tennis, disc golf and nature trails.
Mississippi
Learn about the seven genres of music that originated in Tennessee and understand their significance to music history by following the Tennessee Music Pathways. This statewide program helps preserve the legacy of music from the largest cities to the smallest communities.

Launched in 2007 and representing green-certified hotels, restaurants, festivals and events, the Virginia Green logo can be found around the state. Nearly 2,000 businesses have made voluntary commitments to reduce their environmental impact.

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park—which offers 17,000 years of continuous human history and predates Stonehenge by 12,000 years—may soon join the ranks of Yellowstone and Yosemite in becoming a U.S. national park. Come marvel at these earthen mounds dotting the rolling hills and see the mosaic of habitats along 1,214 hectares.

Farm-to-table is embraced by many restaurants in South Carolina, but Greenville, in particular, is a hotbed of activity. A number of area restaurants go so far as seed-to-table, where the chefs fill the gaps not covered by local farms. Not only are visitors treated to healthy, local ingredients, but in the case of Topsoil Kitchen and The Anchorage, nods from James Beard are included in the mix.
South Carolina
In the rolling hills of south-central Kentucky lies Mammoth Cave National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the world’s longest known network of caves and underground passageways. Different tours are available through the nearly 694 kilometers of explored areas, ranging from short and accessible to long and challenging. Above ground, you’ll find opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and canoeing.

It seems like everywhere you turn, sustainability is the word du jour. While it’s just a buzzword for some, conscious travellers have always practiced what they preach. We find that Canadian Travelzoo members do want to support local businesses and reinvest in the community, preserve wildlife and natural resources as well as use eco-friendly travel options.
So we decided that this year, we would ask Southern states in the U.S. how they represent the Sustainable South.
