Introduction
Harold's pilgrimage begins in Kingsbridge in South Devon — a quaint market town with cobbled streets and eclectic shops — where he lives an uneventful life with his wife, Maureen.
Set into a cleft on North Devon's coastline, Clovelly is a historic landmark that continues to preserve its fishing village heritage.
The New Inn, built in the 17th century, is situated halfway down Clovelly's cobbled hill. It has just eight rooms, some of which have balconies. Breakfast is served in The Hamlyn Room, which later in the day serves freshly caught fish and chips.

Although Harold set off from Devon weeks ago, it is in Bath he discovers that, in many ways, his journey had just begun.
Why go?
A thermal spa town with classic Georgian and Roman architecture, Bath is a designated UNESCO world heritage site. The grandeur of the Circus and Royal Crescent made it very popular with 18th-century high society — Jane Austen even used it as the setting for two of her novels.
Experience the city's museums and galleries, sample an original Sally Lunn bun, and bathe in naturally warm, mineral-rich waters at Thermae Bath Spa. Further afield lie the open Somerset countryside, and Bristol — named one of Europe's best city breaks by Condé Nast Traveller.
Where to stay:
Brooks Guesthouse occupies a pair of grand Victorian townhouses within five minutes' walk of Royal Victoria Park and the Royal Crescent. A 2-night mini break from October until March is £229 with this deal, including breakfast, prosecco, and chocolates.
"At its heart is the personal touch", with a "magnificent magnolia outside and a colourful interior", says Country & Town House.
Period features at the "stylish" (The Daily Telegraph) hotel include cornicing, chandeliers, and fireplaces.
It is here that Harold gives away his guidebook and posts his debit card home realising he already has everything he needs.
This part of England is sprinkled with Medieval market squares, postcard-pretty English villages, quintessential country pubs, and rolling landscapes.
Get a glimpse of Regency-era life in Cheltenham or explore the gardens at Highgrove House, the family residence of King Charles III. The ancient woodlands of the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds offer ample opportunities to get outdoors.
Why go?
"Steeped in history and with a tremendous outlook over rolling Gloucestershire fields," says The Daily Telegraph, "Charingworth Manor has a picturesque garden, a first-class restaurant and an impressive range of facilities."
Rooms are individually decorated; you can choose between Classic Doubles and larger Deluxe Doubles, many of which offer views of the hotel's grounds.
Where to stay:
The Grade II-listed hotel is in Boroughbridge, a town on the River Ure in North Yorkshire. Originally a private home, it became a coaching inn in the 1700s, and was one of the most important inns on the route from London to Edinburgh.
Today, it's a hotel with a bar, a restaurant, and a leisure club, complete with a 12-metre swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, and gym equipment — all leisure facilities are free for guests to use.
Where to stay:
Maureen travels to Yorkshire to ask Harold to come home, but he must finish what he started.
The largest UK county by area size, Yorkshire packs a punch with its breathtaking scenery, cities with a rich industrial heritage, coastal resort towns, and historic landmarks.
The region has inspired artists through the ages — including JMW Turner, the Brontë sisters, and Barbara Hepworth — and continues to serve as a backdrop for popular period dramas.
Beyond Medieval York and genteel Harrogate, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are a big draw for walking and cycling.

Harold's 87-day journey ends when he reaches Queenie's hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland. Has his journey made a difference?
Historic castles, quaint seaside towns, and remote landscapes await in Northumberland. The northernmost county in England was historically fought over by kings and invaders, as evidenced by its lofty fortresses and the 2000-year-old Hadrian's Wall.
Nature lovers will be in their element: the Farne Islands are a natural habitat for seabirds and seals (and Sir David Attenborough's favourite place to see nature); Northumberland National Park is replete with lesser-known trails and tranquil beauty spots, and its pristine dark skies are ideal for stargazing and chasing the Northern Lights.
Close to the market town of Alnwick, The Hog's Head Inn has undergone a recent refurbishment and is ideally placed to explore Northumberland county. The sandy beaches along the coast are 10 minutes by car and the eastern edge of Northumberland National Park is 30 minutes away.
Other spots worth visiting are Alnwick Castle, that served as the magical Hogwarts in the first two films in the "Harry Potter" franchise, and Alnwick Garden, home to 300 cherry blossom trees, a bamboo labyrinth, and a poison garden.
Harold Fry was never meant to be a hero. But when he learns his friend Queenie is dying, he is moved to act. He walks to the post box to send her a letter, but decides to keep walking, all the way to her hospice, some 500 miles away. Surprising even himself, Harold embarks on a walk of hope, determined to travel the length of England to save his friend. Starring Academy Award® Winner Jim Broadbent as Harold and Penelope Wilton as his wife Maureen, "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" is an uplifting tale of self-discovery, redemption and learning to seize the moment. In cinemas April 28.
