Dollar General Literacy Foundation
For the past several years, Store Manager Nitin selected the local Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to receive items donated at his store in his hometown of Saddle Brook, NJ. Additionally, Nitin collects money for another local charity to purchase food to distribute to hungry community members each month. Saddle Brook Mayor Robert White recognized Nitin in 2022 and 2023 for his outstanding leadership and commitment to service.
South Carolina store associate Shatwanna understands the importance of helping others and always goes the extra mile to make people feel supported as a caring mother and cancer survivor. Shatwanna provides school supplies to students in need and collects hats for cancer patients in her community. She works to ensure community members have access to essentials, and she regularly serves meals to the homeless and elderly. Dollar General’s DG Kindness program donated $1,000 to Jubilee Outreach Ministry to recognize Shatwanna’s work. The funds aimed to help the organization provide food, clothes and comfort to those in need in the Beaufort, SC community.
Brandi, a store manager in Sebree, KY, exemplifies DG’s mission of
Serving Others. Brandi regularly works with a local family to ensure they have necessary essentials, such as food and home supplies, and worked with peers to collect money to buy a family a new mattress during a time of need. She regularly purchases essentials for others and recently organized a donation drive for another community member whose house burned down. Dollar General’s DG Kindness initiative recently recognized Brandi’s heart for service through a $1,000 donation to Landon’s Hope Resource Center in her honor.
Melody, a district manager in Des Moines, IA, is helping her community
in several ways. When a family in her community lost everything in a fire, Melody donated clothes for the children and purchased a Dollar General gift card to help the family repurchase home goods. She also donated blankets, clothing and food to a local nonprofit that serves homeless individuals. To support Melody’s efforts, Dollar General’s DG Kindness program made a $1,000 charitable donation in her name to Riverside Community Church to help support their food pantry program.
Marlon finds opportunities to support his community and embody Dollar General’s mission of Serving Others. As a district manager in Hattiesburg, MS, after his stores began donating food to a food pantry operated by Edwards Street Fellowship Center (ESFC), he met with the nonprofit’s director to learn how he and his team could further serve the community. In addition to volunteering at the ESFC, Marlon and his Dollar General team decorate brown paper bags with fun and inspiring, hand-written messages used to distribute meals to children in need. Marlon is an informal liaison for ESFC, sharing information on available resources, such as temporary housing, clothing, food and medical needs, with those in need.
