Destinations to make the mind wander

Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia is home to eight World Heritage Sites, but the prettiest has to be Plitvice Lakes National Park. Its landscape features 16 fresh-water lakes, cascading waterfalls and dense forests, populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars, lizards and rare bird species. Not to mention the butterflies, which flutter above the 18-kilometre wooden footbridges and pathways that snake across the jade-green waters below. As the seasons change, the park transforms in colour. In summer months, the waters can shift to anything from bottle green to turquoise blue, due to the algae and minerals. Autumn brings with it hues of copper and gold, while winter blankets it in the purest white snow. Being Croatia’s largest National Park, covering a total of 300 square kilometres, it takes a total of six hours to walk around – but you’ll probably need longer because you’ll be stopping every five minutes to take a photo. If that seems like too much effort, don’t worry. You can always take one of the boat rides on offer to the lower lakes instead.

Minneriya National Park
If witnessing herds of elephants in the glory of their natural habitat appeals to you, then head to Minneriya National Park. Situated in central Sri Lanka, this beautiful terrain of tropical forests, wetlands and grasslands is home to a wide and exciting range of animals. Purple-faced langur monkeys, water buffalo and sambar deer all live here, plus almost 170 species of bird. There are even rare sightings of leopards and sloth bears. But the truly magical attraction here is the hundreds of elephants, who can be spotted all year round as they come to drink and bathe, and feed on the fresh grass. If you visit between June and September, when the dry season is in full swing, you’ll be privy to ‘The Gathering’. This is the largest meeting of Asian elephants on the planet. Hundreds of these gentle giants come to socialise, search for mates, and drink from the Minneriya water tank, which is nearly 2,000 years old. From the comfort of your 4x4, you’ll see graceful mother elephants carefully guiding their calves into the water for some playtime. Wildlife-lovers and photography experts will be in their element.
TUI Care Foundation and World Animal Protection have joined forces in an effort to protect around 1,500 Asian elephants in captivity by 2020. Together, we’re supporting welfare-friendly venues, so that people can have responsible wildlife experiences across Sri Lanka, Thailand and four other countries in the region.

Lanzarote might be the smallest of the Canaries, but it goes big on romantic scenery, with sweeping sandy beaches surrounded by volcanic peaks. The Lanzarote Grand Tour puts these other-worldly landscapes in the limelight. Set off from TUI SENSIMAR Natura Palace, which sits on Playa Blanca’s scenic seafront. In Timanfaya National Park, you’ll visit the dramatic Los Hervideros lava cliffs. And you can watch water boil or straw burst into flames at the famous Fire Mountain. Then there’s everyone’s favourite stop – a traditional winery. The island is a prime wine-making territory, thanks to a run of volcanic eruptions in the 18th century. Myth 1
Sleeping on the plane is the best way to avoid jet lag.
TRUE: On an overnight flight, sleeping on the plane is a huge help if you stick to your destination’s time zone. Avoid sleeping pills as they can make you groggy when you land – try natural alternatives, such as essential oils, instead. You could also recalibrate your sleep schedule a few days before your flight. This is especially good for children – make their bedtime 20 minutes earlier or later each night, depending on the time at your destination.
Myth 2
You can’t get jet lag on short-haul flights.
FALSE: Jet lag can be a factor even on short flights. According to the NHS, crossing one or two time zones doesn’t usually cause jet lag. Three to six results in mild jet lag, and crossing seven to 12 will result in the strongest effect. So, if you head off to the Greek islands, a short flight away, you’ll pass into your third time zone and could struggle sleeping. “It can take around one day per time zone crossed for our bodies to get used to the new sleep cycle,” says sports scientist Dr. Thomas Reilly.
Drinking alcohol on a plane will help you sleep and therefore avoid jet lag.
FALSE: As relaxing as a glass of wine may be, alcohol is a hindrance, not a help. The symptoms of dehydration – fatigue, headaches, and dizziness – mirror the symptoms of jet lag, making it feel that much worse. And alcohol increases dehydration. Drink lots of water instead – you’ll feel better for staying hydrated. And if that isn’t convincing enough, just imagine combining jet lag with a hangover.

Jet lag’s one of those frustrating parts of travel, caused by disrupting our bodies’ sleep cycle when we cross time zones. Jet lag cures are rife with myths, but which ones work? We sort the fact from the fiction.

It’s truly special to see turtles in the wild, but it’s also important to protect them. That’s where the TUI Care Foundation comes in.
BETTER HOLIDAYS BETTER WORLD
Cape Verde has one of the largest populations of nesting loggerhead turtles in the world. Every summer, thousands of these gentle giants swim to the islands to lay their eggs, ready to hatch in the autumn.
ENDANGERED
Poaching, climate change and beachfront development have all made loggerhead turtles an endangered species. That’s why the TUI Care Foundation has teamed up with Project Biodiversity, to create the TUI Turtle Aid Programme.
TURTLE TALK
Based on the island of Sal, Turtle Aid Programme preserves and protects the loggerhead turtles. As part of this, there are nightly patrols along the main nesting beaches, to make sure the turtles are safe from poachers. Sometimes it’s deemed too risky to leave the nests where they are, so volunteers transfer the eggs to Project Biodiversity’s hatchery. A couple of months later, the baby turtles are released into the ocean.
LESSONS FOR THE FUTURE
We’re currently training 190 teachers on the importance of turtle conservation, and teaching 30 tour guides about ethical turtle-watching. As a result, the TUI Turtle Aid Programme manages to protect around 170,000 eggs every year.
