Head into the hills to learn more about Limone’s citrus-heavy history at the Limonaia del Castèl museum. Lemons feature in lots of the dishes and drinks you can try in this colourful town.

Salò

The piazzas and long lakeside promenade are stuffed with great places to eat and drink. Olive oil’s big business around here – visit a local olive grove to taste it for yourself. The town dates back to Roman times and it was Mussolini’s base during WW2 so there's plenty of history to discover too.

Bardolino

A lakeside town that’s in love with the grape – vineyards cover the nearby hillsides. Book a tour to taste the local wines – the rosè in particular is world class. Home to the longest promenade on Lake Garda that’s lined with bars and cafes.

Lazise

Grab a ferry from the harbour to visit places like Pescheria, Bardolino or Maderno – with great views all the way. Home to one of Lake Garda’s few sandy beaches – perfect for relaxing on the water’s edge. Don’t miss the paying a visit to the castle and Roman villas while you’re here.

Garda

Jump on a ferry from the lakefront promenade and hop between lots of different towns around the lake. If you fancy exploring at your own pace, you could hire a small private boat and pick your own route. Garda’s a lively town set in a wide bay, with pebbly beaches just right for a spot of lakeside lounging.

Maderno

A great jumping-off point for boat trips over to the secluded island of Isola del Garda. You can take to the water in all sorts of ways here – hire paddleboards and canoes from the beach. Explore a tangle of walking trails up in the hills, including to the peak of Monte Pizzocolo.

Malcesine

A pretty harbour town with winding stone streets and a must-visit Medieval castle. Home to Lake Garda’s only cable car, which will whisk you up dramatic Monte Baldo. Pick from plenty of mountaintop walking trails high above the lake or try out paragliding for the best views of all.

Torbole

A relaxed village nestled between mountains with knockout views down Lake Garda from its northern shore. Stroll down the lakeside promenade and watch windsurfers and sailing boats - or get out on the water yourself. Head inland for longer and more energetic walks – plus even better views from up high.

Riva

A historical harbour town with Roman walls, a romantic clock tower and a Medieval castle. The landscape’s seriously dramatic but the walking doesn’t have to be – follow the flat lakefront path to Torbole or take a trip back in time on the 2km Peace Trail. Get up high for the best views, and try the longer Ponale trail to discover waterfalls and tunnels.

Sirmione

Set on a narrow spit of land sticking out into the lake, Sirmione’s hot on history and thermal spas. Visit the Medieval castle but leave enough time for the Grotte di Cattulo – a huge Roman villa – as well as the unique Jamaica Beach with sunsets you’ll never forget. You’ll find a wide range of food here, including ice creams almost the size of your head.

Desenzano

This cosmopolitan town’s famous for its archaeological museum and elaborate Roman villa. Loads of music concerts happen here over the summer – sometimes up in the hilltop castle. With a train station in town, it’s easy to visit other places in Italy – like Milan, Verona and Venice – if you stay here.

Gardone Riviera

This part of Lake Garda’s known for its lush botanical gardens and lavish bloom-filled parks. Don’t miss Il Vittoriale – an intriguing complex of gardens and waterways filled with interesting artefacts. While away an afternoon strolling down the promenade and taking in the lake views, or wandering the colourful backstreets.

Castelnuovo

You’re right on the doorstep of several theme parks, including Gardaland and the Sea Life Aquarium. Check out the local church, medieval tower and war memorial in this small town set in pretty countryside. You’ll find lots of family-friendly Italian restaurants here, where you can try the local food.

Peschiera

This ancient town’s set within a Venetian fortress between turquoise canals, and it’s a UNESCO heritage site. Wander across arched cobblestone bridges, admire ornate balconies and wonder at Roman ruins. Spend a leisurely day exploring the town’s many museums, learning about the part it played in World War I, or visit the Sigurtà botanical gardens.
