You don’t have to be a hiker to enjoy Chamonix’s cracking mountain views, thanks to the Aiguille du Midi cable car that’ll carry you up to the 3,842m summit. You can get up close to France’s longest glacier, the Mer de Glace, on holidays here too – just take the bright red Montenvers cog train up to the top station.

Wind your way between forest-blanketed mountains and vivid green meadows on the Zillertal Railway, which takes you from Mayrhofen to Jenbach. There you’ll find the brightly painted carriages of the Achenseebahn, a steam-powered cog railway that’s been chugging up to Achensee Lake since 1989.

Head to the heights aboard the Jungfrau Railway – it’ll whisk you up to the Europe’s highest train station at 3,454m, with views over to Italy, France and Germany.
