Naples is one of Europe’s oldest cities, so it’s steeped in history and architecture. Thanks to its position, it’s also the perfect place to explore the time-frozen city of Pompeii. Capri’s also a short boat ride away, and with Sorrento along the coastline too, there’s plenty to do. Off the tourist track: Bourbon Tunnel Lurking 100 feet below the streets of Naples is a cavernous tunnel filled with rusting vintage cars and wartime relics. It was originally built as a secret escape route for the royal family in the 1800s.

Villefranche is a piece of paradise among the glitz and glamour of the French Riviera – here, you can enjoy the beach or watch the world go by from a café. And if you’re looking to tick off more must-see places, Monaco and Nice are only a short journey away. Off the tourist track: La Turbie This small town is perched on the mountainside. It’s known for its narrow, cobbled streets and Roman monument. If you don’t mind a hike, head up the Tête de Chien where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Monaco and the coastline.

Civataveacchia is Rome’s main port. The capital’s reputation speaks for itself – it’s packed with top-tier sights. If you want to stay local, you can walk over to local churches and grab lunch in a nearby trattoria. Or, go for a stroll along the promenade. Off the tourist track: Villa Doria Pamphili This 17th-century villa sits in the largest landscaped park in Rome. Its beautiful French-style gardens are popular with locals, and tend to be less crowded than the more famous Villa Borghese gardens.

Livorno is the gateway to explore two of Italy’s most famous cities – Florence and Pisa. Florence is full of picturesque piazzas and sculptures, whilst the latter is famous for its leaning tower. Off the tourist track: Tuck in to local dishes in Livorno Livorno is a bit of a food-mecca, known for its abundance of seafood. If you’re spending your day here, we recommend you try cacciucco – an Italian fish stew native to the city.

For somewhere so small, Gibraltar certainly makes up for its size with the number of things to do while you’re there. If you’ve never been before, we recommend taking a tour of the famous rock, which is where you’ll find the southernmost point of Gibraltar. And don’t forget to head to the top of the rock to visit the most respected residents – the Barbary apes. Off the tourist track: The Alameda Gardens If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Gibraltar, head to the Alameda Gardens. These small botanical gardens offer up plenty of peace and serenity – some of the plants are said to be over 200 years old.

Valencia has so much going for it, from its sandy beaches and outstanding architecture to its impressive food scene. And the best bit? You can discover it all without the crowds you’d find in other big Spanish cities. Alongside its historic buildings, you’ll also find futuristic ones, like the biggest aquarium in Europe and an interactive museum. Off the tourist track: Ruzafa Head to the neighbourhood of Ruzafa for a stroll through the cobbled streets of this old Arab quarter. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and galleries to wander in and out of, too.

You can spend your day wondering through the town of Toulon, browsing through the picturesque Provencal daily street market. If you want to venture further afield, then the French Riviera’s chic capital – St Tropez – is nearby. For those interested in all things nautical, this place gives you a great insight into the town’s maritime history right up to the present day.
