Customer profile
The home renovation and remodeling industry is booming. The sector has skyrocketed over the past few years, with estimated spend set to reach $485 billion in 2023. This boom is straining an industry already notorious for poor customer satisfaction. Insufficient renovations and a lack of reliability and professionalism are common reasons why the category ranked second among the top sectors with consumer complaints in the U.S. this year.
Leaf Home, a home renovation and safety company that launched in 2005, prides itself on breaking the mold. The company’s core mission is to deliver quality products and services on time, locally and at scale. No matter what customers are installing—a gutter protection system, walk-in tub, water purification system, or stairlift—Leaf Home offers an end-to-end experience that establishes trust.
Maintaining and improving this customer experience starts with the supply chain. Historically, Leaf Home managed logistics manually, using outdated processes that cost the company time and money. The company’s solution was to modernize transportation management by partnering with Uber Freight in July to onboard and implement an automated TMS. While the partnership is in its early stages, Leaf Home’s logistics team is excited to leverage technology solutions such as real-time visibility and system routing, which are poised to uplevel all elements of its supply chain operations.
“Our team needed to get more creative and proactive in how we move our freight. Leveraging a modern TMS that could improve cost savings, shipment tracking and consolidation is what drove us to Uber Freight,” says Matthew McKinney, Director of Logistics and Distribution at Leaf Home. “Our goal as a company is to not just efficiently book freight with our carriers, but book our freight in the best possible way.”

Automation is vital to modernize transportation management, and Leaf Home looks forward to seeing it in action via Uber Freight’s TMS. For example, the company currently relies on clerks to book loads all day. By adopting the TMS, Leaf Home will be able to practice automated, real-time procurement to book and move loads quickly at the most optimal rates.
“Our long-term goal is to automate these types of processes so we can put the time we normally spend managing those into other parts of the business, such as improving carrier contracts and performance.” says Logan Armaro, Logistics Manager at Leaf Home.
Having a dedicated team on deck to answer questions about implementing tech-enabled tools effectively is equally as important as access to the tech itself. Leaf Home has weekly check-ins with an Uber Freight project manager, creating a more seamless onboarding experience. The project manager ensures the company stays on track with integration timelines, and can answer relevant questions the logistics team might have about adopting automated TMS processes.
Leaf Home plans to fully onboard Uber Freight’s TMS by November 2023. The company is approaching the transformation with a specific mindset: the supply chain means everything when it comes to fulfilling its brand promise. Arriving when you say you're going to arrive, accomplishing what the customer is paying you to accomplish, and providing follow-up support after a job is complete is critical to establishing customer trust and loyalty. Leaf Home plans to deliver this experience at scale by leveraging Uber Freight’s logistics experts and technology designed to uplevel its supply chain operations.
Outlook: Embracing the tech and human sides of TMS to drive supply chain success
Results
At the time Leaf Home partnered with Uber Freight, the logistics team used a largely manual process to manage operations, supported by a few disparate TMS software solutions that were time consuming to manage separately. By adopting Uber Freight’s TMS, the company will be able access every solution they need through a single platform.
“We're consolidating three systems into one. This will help us become more efficient at tracking shipments, and gathering data to understand the performance of our transportation modes and carrier lanes,” says McKinney. “Although we’re not fully integrated with Uber Freight’s TMS stack yet, we're already seeing the possibilities and it’s pretty exciting.”
The support of a full team is also crucial to ensure successful implementation. Already, having Uber Freight experts drive the onboarding process is empowering Leaf Home’s team to effectively manage supply chain operations. Prior to the partnership, Leaf Home’s logistics team was often tied up in project managing its TMS solutions, from uploading software to fixing technical glitches. With Uber Freight’s team hands-on every step of the integration, Leaf Home can remain focused on daily logistics processes.
